New youth mental health service
Serena Kirby. An increase in children experiencing mental health crises and presenting at the region’s emergency departments has led to a new crisis response service. Run by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, the acute care response team will be based in Albany but will cover Denmark and the Great Southern.
Taskforce Guardian charges 22 in Darling Downs deployment
Taskforce Guardian alongside Toowoomba police have charged 22 young people with 78 offences and diverted 11 young people from the youth justice system, during the ninth deployment to the Darling Downs. Between September 9 and 16, Taskforce Guardian partnered with local police to conduct high-visibility police patrols, finalise open investigations, target active serious offending and engage at-risk or offending young people and their caregivers with support services and agencies.

Free access to our libraries – university opens its doors to help Year 12 students study for the HSC: Charles Sturt University
Charles Sturt University is opening its doors to Year 11 and 12 students to give them the best chance at success for their HSC exams. The University will open its libraries across its Wagga Wagga, Albury-Wodonga, Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo and Port Macquarie campuses, as well as online, to allow students free access to study spaces and educational materials.
Year 10 work experience
During the last week of Term 4 Nhill College had their Year 10s out on Work Experience. Students were placed in Adelaide, Bordertown, Kaniva, Nhill, Rainbow, Horsham, Bendigo, Ballarat and Melbourne.

Mallee youth program headed to Tasmania
Mallee Accommodation and Support Program’s Youth Mentoring Program is headed to Tasmania from Saturday for a five-day hike through the Tasman Peninsula National Park. Since it began in 2006 the program has enriched the lives of over 220 underprivileged and disconnected youth in the Sunraysia area, supporting them through mentoring and exposing them to positive life experiences and challenges.
Wave of whooping cough
Health experts are reminding pregnant women and infants to get vaccinated against whooping cough. The reminder follows a wave of the infectious disease, seeing case numbers climb to their highest in the last six years across the state. According to the Department of Health and Wellbeing, South Australia recorded 492 cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, so far this year—more than 10 times the number of cases reported at the same time last year.
The future of football
It was the Saturday that began at 8 a.m. with junior netball, and featured North-Central’s 15 grand finals of football, netball and hockey. It drew a record "gate" of $43,203 at Donald for the climax of a 2024 season that began on April 13, and concluded with a day of great excitement last Saturday, September 14.

Australia's most promising paraders of dairy cattle have been announced by Agricultural Shows Australia as eligible to compete in the national finals of the prestigious annual competition to be judged this month at Melbourne Royal Show. The winner of the dairy cattle young paraders competition will be determined by who has best prepared, presented and paraded their animal before a judge.
Former Glossop High School campus put onto the market”¦ Golden opportunity?
The old Glossop High School site – officially now up for sale – should be repurposed as a centre for Riverland youth, rather than sold off to private interests, a long-time local says. Dormant since 2022, the vast 17-hectare site is now on the market, but local man Ian Penno says the Riverland is "losing an opportunity" to address concerns with troubled young people in the region.

Tigers under-14s into grand final
In the Uniting Church under-fourteens’ second semi-final match it was the young Tigers who got the grand final spot with a win over the Boort Magpies. The under-14s played a very good game and kicking with the wind in the first quarter, the Tigers took a handy lead, which was cut to 6 points at half-time.
