Beanies off to Barkly winners

The Community Hub hosted felting workshops in June to create beanies for the Alice Springs Beanie Festival. Entries were sent down for display, judging and possible sale, and life went on. So it was a pleasant surprise to find three of the entries won awards.

The trick to becoming an author

Former Naracoorte High scholar Linda Cawley (nee Stanford) has written a children’s book called The Trick with Sticks. It is cleverly written in a Dr. Seuss style to help children and their parents with their child’s friendships. We all know how friendships can be tricky, so the book explores the bonds of friendship and how those bonds are formed.

Sieben dairy parade finalist

Kirstin Nicholson. Georgia Sieben will represent Victoria at the 2021 Agricultural Shows Australia National Young Judges finals. The 18-year-old, who grew up on a farm in Torrumbarry, has been showing and parading at the Cohuna Show with her family from a young age.

Local author showcased at Rockhampton Regional Libraries

Rockhampton Regional Libraries will share tales of empire, war, love, betrayal, Spanish Influenza and youthful naiveté, thanks to a Rotary Club donation. Local author Mark Svendsen has recently released "As Hammers Fall", a book for young adults focusing on WWI with a Brisbane perspective – and it is now available at the Southside Library.

Young Lucindale auctioneer impresses

Eliza Berlage. A budding auctioneer from Lucindale will compete for a national title, after judges named him state runner-up. Despite only beginning his training this year, Nathan McCarthy placed second in the South Australian Livestock and Property Agents Association Ltd Young Auctioneer competition in Naracoorte this month.

Review – When Anna Came to Stay

This is a beautifully presented and illustrated book which is a timely reminder to older children and to adolescents of the need to be aware of bullies and how they can attack a young person’s self-esteem in order to gain control over their emotions – sometimes with devastating consequences.

Review – Alice the Kangaroo

Did you know that a kangaroo can leap nine metres in a single bound, about the length of a school bus!? Or the perhaps implausible way in which the town of Alice Springs got its name?
