Meet the publishers

Ali Bohn. Tired of sitting in a mission brown office of cold, exposed brick, an axe-wielding statue that comes to life at night and partially chewed carpet (due to the castors on the swivel chairs, we didn’t have a plague of rats living in the office), The Koondrook and Barham Bridge Newspaper’s Lloyd Polkinghorne made the brave decision to do a full renovation of the office a couple of months ago.

Earlier this year, I paddled over to Lord Howe and found out the story of the mighty Signal from Stephen Sia, the Editor and owner of this beautiful island's independent newspaper.

Community owned through the Richmond River Independent Community Association, the Richmond River Independent covers the Richmond Valley and Kyogle areas in Northern New South Wales. Ben Hawke spent some time on the job with the editor, Susanna Freymark, and Bob Mills, the Association President.

Cape York Weekly is the only locally-owned paper on Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland. While I was travelling around country Queensland, I spoke with the Weekly's Editor, Matt Nicholls, about the origins of the paper, how he got to be the editor and the future of independents.

It's easy to understand why The Longreach Leader has been the independent voice of Central West Queensland since 1923 when you meet its Managing Editor, Colin Jackson.
