Balranald Shire Council Mayor Cr Louie Zaffina has called on both the Australian and NSW Governments to urgently reform the way grant funding reaches communities affected by water buybacks, saying the current competitive model gives small rural councils no fair chance.

Butler calls for state to guarantee regional NSW 33 per cent of budget funding

Independent Member for Barwon Roy Butler says this year's NSW Budget, handed down by Treasurer Daniel Mookhey, was not a great result for regional communities, and is calling on the state government to guarantee regional New South Wales a minimum 33 per cent share of the budget.

Leeton courthouse carpark to be handed to Aboriginal Land Council after court ruling

A central Leeton carpark is set to be handed over to the Leeton and District Local Aboriginal Land Council, after the NSW Land and Environment Court ruled the NSW Government had wrongly rejected a land rights claim over the site. The court has ordered ownership of the gravel lot on the corner of Oak and Church streets, next to the Leeton courthouse, be transferred to the Land Council within six months.

Fuel crisis forces Little Wings to cut flights for sick country kids

Soaring aviation fuel costs are forcing the children's charity flight service Little Wings to cut back, with consequences for some of the most vulnerable families in the far west. The organisation has had to reduce its number of flights, limiting access to vital developmental assessments and therapy for children in Broken Hill and other remote communities.

A century of racing under threat: the fight to save Broken Hill’s greyhound track

Greyhound racing has been part of Broken Hill for more than a century. On 30 June 2026, Greyhound Racing NSW intends to end it. The decision to close the Broken Hill Greyhounds Club was made earlier this year as part of a broader restructure recommended by an independent Deloitte report, which advised GRNSW to reduce the state's racing footprint to a sustainable number of tracks.
