Haines bill will strengthen disaster communications

Warning that repeated communications failures in regional areas are putting lives at risk, Member for Indi, Helen Haines, on Monday introduced legislation to improve the resilience of Australia's telecommunications networks during natural disasters. Dr Haines said North-East Victoria has endured successive catastrophic events in recent years including the Black Summer bushfires, major flooding in 2022 and 2023 and the January 2026 bushfires that devastated parts of Indi.

Haines claims Budget victories

The Federal Budget on Tuesday night delivered on some of her key priorities but still falls short on addressing the basic needs and long-term prosperity of regional Australia, says the Federal Member for Indi, Helen Haines ... When outlining her priorities with the Treasurer ahead of the budget, Dr Haines had urged the government to deliver meaningful tax reforms, which she welcomed.

Inquiry hears some of us out

Following considerable community pressure and lobbying by Towong Shire Council, the Victorian Parliament’s summer fires inquiry decided to hold a dedicated ‘open mic’ session for Towong residents. "While this session will be held online and not physically in the shire, it will at least provide an opportunity for the inquiry to hear the voices of our communities directly," said Towong mayor, Cr Peter Tolsher.

Cadets honoured with memorial role

After many years of dedicated community support and tireless advocacy by local volunteers, the Australian Army Cadets has officially established a permanent presence in Corryong ... "In a remarkable show of community confidence, the newly formed detachment was entrusted with a significant ceremonial responsibility - emceeing for the official opening of the new memorial on the Corryong Avenue of Honour on Anzac Day," said Captain ACC, Dale Manley.

Our fallen will never be forgotten

On a wet and cold day - 29th August 1918 - a large gathering of members of the community attended the official opening of the Corryong and District Avenue of Honour ... On Anzac Day 2026, community members again gathered at the Avenue of Honour to officially open a new memorial.
