In a display of community spirit, the Year 11 and 12 Vocational Major Personal Development Skills class of 2024 at Donald High School have chosen to undertake a series of projects aimed at improving our local community.
They have been joined by the Donald High School Hands On Learning Group. The classes recently participated in a tree-planting day on the 4th of September organised by Landcare, Andrew Falla, Jarrod Newell and Ralph Melican, contributing to environmental sustainability and helping to restore native vegetation.
Students were eager to get their hands dirty, recognising the long-term benefits of their efforts on local flora and fauna. Their work can be seen on the Sunraysia Highway, on the way to Litchfield.

RUOK?
Next on the horizon is an upcoming RUOK? Day event, focused on promoting mental health through outdoor activities on the 11th of September. This event will include Headspace, the LLEN and our mental health practitioner, Tammy Barber. The Vocational Major students are organising various events that encourage participation, connection, and open conversations about mental well-being. Hands On Learning will be assisting on the day.
Vocational Major’s dedication to a cleaner community has also been evident through regular rubbish pickups, both at school and in public spaces. This initiative not only beautifies the environment but also serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping our shared spaces clean.
“All Abilities”
In addition to their environmental efforts, the Vocational Major class has been actively involved with the “All Abilities” Mallee Sports Assembly group. Students have shared their love of sports, engaging in hockey, swimming, football and others with participants who have disabilities. Many thanks to the Mallee Sports Assembly and Rhonda Allan.
Train painting
One of the most “colourful” projects undertaken by the Vocational Major class and Hands On Learning was to start the painting of the trains at the Donald Train Park. This creative endeavour, once finished, will bring new life to the local landmark and will help preserve it for years to come. Thanks to Mr Graeme Harris for his involvement.
Well done to our young community members for putting their best foot forward and improving the Donald around us.
