Indigenous Australian Datathon 2024: Igniting a blaze of innovation and empowerment!
The Indigenous Australian Datathon (IAD) is coming back for its fourth consecutive year in Cairns, from the 1st to the 3rd of November 2024! Spearheaded by KJR and in collaboration with tech pioneers, communities and universities, IAD is set to create waves of innovation uniting Traditional Owners, technologists, data professionals, start-ups, and students in an extraordinary quest to revolutionise the future of Australian communities.
Soil carbon on rangelands and in hilly topography

With global temperature rise likely to exceed 1.5oC by 2050, interest in the development of skills, practices and technologies for removing carbon dioxide to avoid dangerous climate change abounds. One way to do this is via improved storage of soil organic carbon (SOC), as incremental gains in soil carbon at scale can have massive effect on residual CO2 circulating in the atmosphere.
Gold medalist at Hodgson Vale equestrian centre
With everyone still on an Olympic high from Paris, the RM Equestrian Centre at Hodgson Vale has secured the services of Olympic Equestrian Gold Medalist Stuart Tinney for a series of workshops in September. Stuart Tinney is one of Australian’s foremost equestrians having achieved a gold medal in the 2000 Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics as well as numerous other achievements in competitions all around the world.

"There's no point in taking coal to Newcastle" is an old saying that seems appropriate for what young Ramsay horse trainer Ben Hoey has accomplished as he regularly trains Australian bred Arabian horses for export to rich owners in Arabia. The Hoey family is well known on the Downs as expert horsemen across a variety of disciplines such as Polocrosse, Polo and Endurance Riding and Ben is continuing this proud tradition.
Learning and Walking Together program: pathway to Defence Force careers
RAAF Base Wagga hosted the Learning and Walking Together program, a collaborative initiative between the Defence Work Experience Program (DWEP) and Riverina Pathways Engagement Officer Kyle Breust. This innovative overnight program provided 16 students from the Riverina region, including Narrandera, with an immersive experience in military life, career exploration within the Defence Force, and local cultural enrichment.

Calling all citizen scientists to learn more about groundwater: CDU
Charles Darwin University (CDU) researchers are calling out for over 500 citizen scientists living in the northern part of the Territory and Western Australia to collect water samples from their bores using sampling kits in a bid to increase water security.  Groundwater is stored beneath the Earth’s surface and is often seen as out of sight and out of mind, but it is an important permanent source of water in otherwise dry landscapes. Highest honour for Narrandera Aboriginal Education Officer
Narrandera High School Aboriginal Education Officer, Aunty Joy O’Hara, was awarded a Secretary’s Award for Excellent Service on Monday night at the Sydney Town Hall by the Secretary for Education, Murat Dizdar and former Justice of the High Court The Honourable Michael Kirby. This award was presented as part of Education Week and are the highest awards within the NSW Department of Education.

Land managers across the Murraylands and Riverland are invited to attend a free workshop to find how biochar can be used to improve soil health. The event will be held on-farm at Lameroo ... and include live demonstration of a biochar kiln, weather permitting. Operated by Maccy Biochar, the kiln will be used to burn organic, on-farm waste at a high temperature in a low oxygen environment.
