The first students to complete their studies through the Riverina Teaching Hub pilot program were recognised at a graduation celebration in Wagga Wagga on Tuesday.
The Riverina Teaching Hub was established in 2023 by the NSW Department of Education in partnership with UNSW Sydney to attract and retain local teachers. The model provides on-the-job training for aspiring teachers in local public schools while they study for their teaching degree.
One of the graduates, Peehille Perera, highlighted the exceptional opportunities she’s had to develop her confidence and skills as a teacher through working at Murrumbidgee Regional High School in Griffith while studying for a Master of Secondary Teaching.
“Working in a local high school whilst studying has been such a huge advantage. I’ve had ongoing mentoring and guidance from experienced teachers, which has allowed me to refine my practice and feel so much more confident in the classroom.”
Fellow graduate Elisabetta Lamanna has taken on a full-time teaching position in the English department at Wagga Wagga High School since completing her studies in April.
“I was working at the school as a paraprofessional whilst completing my teaching degree, so the transition into a full-time role as a graduate teacher has been seamless. I know the students well, and my colleagues have been incredibly supportive.”
UNSW Riverina Teaching Hub Director Emily McKinney said the students completing the program would support schools facing dire teacher shortages and needing quality graduates.
“UNSW is committed to producing high-quality, classroom-ready teachers. These graduates have been immersed in the school community from the beginning of their studies and have had access to outstanding educational opportunities through a top 20 global university. It is exciting to see these graduates stepping into their new teaching roles in local schools.”
The graduation celebration was held at Uneke Lounge in Wagga Wagga with guests including UNSW Head of School of Education, Associate Professor Tony Loughland and Federal Member for Riverina, the Hon. Michael McCormack.
