Cambooya’s cross country champs
With the help of the local community to get them there, Cambooya teenagers Kyrna and Tomas Crump both won medals at the Australian Cross Country Championships in Adelaide. Representing their state, the pair competed in both individual and team events.
Our very own Story Dog
Wyreema State School is lucky enough to have access to its own Story Dog, Lady, on a weekly basis and the students love reading to her. Lady is directly sponsored by the Toowoomba West Lions Club but the program itself is run by the charity, Story Dog Australia, which covers the training and insurance of the dog.
Raiders finals
Kendall Jennings. Football and netball finals were held on the weekend, with mother nature delivering sunny skies for winter. It is an achievement for any team to make finals and that fact alone needs celebrating. Saturday, the Raiders Under 16s netball hit the court at Woorinen for the qualifying final to face Kerang. Raiders’ fans gathered courtside to support the girls with club colours, streamers and cheers for outstanding play.

Keith Blaikie. In order to keep our students at the centre of the school’s vision, which is to be an inclusive community committed to high levels of learning for all, staff have been engaged in a body of research known as the Science of Reading.
Allora P-10 staff have fun celebrating Book Week
Most of the staff are dressed as crayons to represent the book “The Day The Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt. After having a giggle at their teachers the P-10 students enjoyed the day by dressing as their favourite book character.
Former junior cricket club distributes unused funds
The past committee of the former Yanchep Redhawks Junior Cricket Club has recently agreed to distribute its unused funding to support local junior sporting clubs in Yanchep and Eglington ... Young at Heart Playgroup
The Young at Heart Playgroup, originally designed to connect young children with residents at the Maldon hospital, has been running for over seven years and now has more than 22 families, parents, grandparents and carers attending with their young children ... This year the playgroup has participated in the National Simultaneous Story Time and has started toddler-time sessions with visits from the Castlemaine Library.
From the lab to the classroom

Clifton hosts karate championships
The Aussie Kids Karate championships were held last Sunday at Clifton with fifty competitors taking part from across the Darling Downs. Allora was represented by six Karate Kids and they competed against clubs from Clifton, Warwick, Dalby, Oakey, Millmerran, Gatton, Highfields and Toowoomba.
App research helps speech therapy for rural Australian children
Research led by a Charles Sturt University academic examined the innovative ‘SayBananas!’ app that may assist children with speech sound disorders (SSD) and their parents living in less populated areas ... the effectiveness study examined the usability and rating of ‘SayBananas!’, a Mario-style video-game providing high-dose individualised speech therapy with rural Australian children.
Community spirit showcased at Padthaway
Chris Oldfield. The community spirit of Tatiara District Council was on show last week when its monthly meeting was held in Padthaway’s sporting complex. Some of the many key issues raised included road safety, a lack of child care and wishes for a school hall and pool. The issues were raised by Padthaway Primary School’s Years 5 and 6 class.
Pony Club August rally
Nicole Funston. What a wonderful weekend of horses and ponies. We started on Saturday with a show jumping clinic with Allan Mitchell. A legend of his trade and finished off on Sunday with our August Rally.
Barkly juniors compete in Indigenous tennis carnival
Ten juniors from Canteen Creek and five from Arlparra travelled to Darwin last week for the third National Indigenous Tennis Carnival. The children were treated to an unforgettable experience, which included a first plane ride and a use of an escalator for some of the children.
Worsnop lands first career double
Jeff Hanson. It was a day of firsts for Teighan Wornsop at Narrandera on Saturday, with the young jockey riding her first winning double. Teaming up with Cowra trainer Maree Hopkins - who was coincidently celebrating her birthday - the 22-year-old booted home a double, winning the 1200m Benchmark 50 Handicap aboard Mystic Flame ($2.90) and the 1400m Benchmark 50 Handicap aboard Gloraya ($17).
Somewhere over the rainbow, Millie became cancer-free
Being cancer-free is something to shout about. Or in 11 year old Millie Trustum’s case, something to inspire you to draw a rainbow ... Millie’s awareness rainbows were selected by the Kids Cancer Project to be included on a whale tail statue as part of the Waterfront Whale Tales sculpture exhibition in Sydney.
Warumungu man awarded prestigious scholarship
The Aurora Foundation announced that Trinity College alum Ethan Taylor is one of two Charlie Perkins scholarship recipients for 2022 ... Ethan says that this opportunity is his first step towards injecting the lived experiences of Aboriginal people into professional political philosophy.

Cats coach Maldon!
It’s not often that locals get the chance to rub shoulders with footballing legends, but this is what happened when ex-Geelong players Matthew Scarlett and Darren Milburn came to MFNC training last Thursday night. They were generous with their time and gave sound advice to both junior and senior footballers. Both defenders, Matthew and Darren were outstanding players at a time when Geelong was one of the best teams in the competition.
Nobby State School celebrates 125th
On the 15th November 1897, the first students rocked up to the new Nobby State School, signalling the start of one of the most successful small schools in the local area with students still achieving at the school in 2022. As well as having a good academic record, Nobby is a school that knows how to turn on a great event for its community so locals are looking forward to the celebration.
Community spirit – Theme for Catholic Education Week

Rural Aid secures drinking water for students after Valkyrie State School ran dry
A small central Queensland state school now has a secure drinking water supply, after six years of dry taps and plastic bottles. Australia’s most trusted rural charity, Rural Aid, has facilitated the installation of a SOURCE Hydropanel array at Valkyrie State School and believes that this technology could help facilitate drinking water security for other struggling schools.
Tennant High School teacher wins national top educator award
A Tennant Creek High School teacher has been named among Australia’s top educators in the Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards. Senior Teacher for Inclusion Fransina Norval was recognised for her work in combining in-formed practices, with a wealth of experience teaching in special education and growing a strong support system for her students with complex needs.
