Students get climate-action ready at Horsham
Agriculture Victoria’s Horsham SmartFarm recently provided local students hands-on experience of climate action research, with a focus on preserving important grains and plants for the future. The visit was by a group of students who are currently studying Agricultural and Horticultural Science at Goroke P-12 College.
Nhill’s “Big Red”
Meet the Immortal River Red Gum – a heritage-listed tree on the Mallee Dam Road, adjoining Mount Elgin Swamp. It’s one of the thickest, tallest, and oldest River Red Gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) in Victoria and can be found 13 km south of Nhill. The National Trust estimates the tree is about 400 years old and has been listed as a significant tree because it is particularly old and because of its outstanding size.
Donald Springs into racing action
Donald's race meeting on Sunday, September 17, was blessed with beautiful warm sunshine, suggesting that the Spring Racing Carnival has arrived. The track was rated a good four, with an upgrade to a good three prior to race three, with a moderate crowd attending the event.

Like father, like son
On page 15 of North-Central League’s giant-sized grand final “Recorder”, distributed at Boort on Saturday, is a list of 25 people who, since the resumption of football after World War II, have given outstanding service to the development of the game in this part of the State. Among them is Donald’s Frank O’Shea, widely recognized for his coaching of junior teams, and for his newspaper reporting of North-Central football.

Discovery of freshwater plant and algae with methane-reducing properties: Agrifutures
A chance conversation with a landholder interested in the methane-reducing properties of red seaweed prompted a research team led by Deakin University to examine if there were freshwater alternatives. A mix of algae scooped out of a Victorian waterway and a species of amphibious grass plucked from a stream have both been found to reduce methane production by up to 24 per cent...

Maldon Cycling Group has just published a book with information about 16 local bike rides ... Peter Strang, one of the team who produced the book said, “There are some great rides around Maldon. Hopefully, this book will help some locals and visitors explore the area by bike”.
Pony clubbers pick right time to make their run up the straight
The Pony Club Victoria’s Ride to Time final held at Moonee Valley was a huge thrill for the 20 young riders who qualified in trials across the state. They got to gallop on the hallowed turf where the world-famous Cox Plate is run and rubbed shoulders with the elite jockeys Greg Childs and Michelle Payne.

To help set up new rural youth network … young people wanted
The North Central LLEN, in partnership with YouThrive Victoria and Northern District Community Health, is looking for passionate young people to co-design a new Rural Youth Network (RYN) for the shires of Buloke, Loddon, Gannawarra and the town of St Arnaud (BLGs) ... to build a sense of community and connection for young rural and regional Victorians to expand social networks and provide access to useful resources and opportunities.
Cracker of a show
Local rural and agricultural shows are making a comeback and the Corryong Show is no exception. "Our sponsorship and community engagement has been huge leading into our show on October 7th," said secretary, Emma Klippel.
Bill will kickstart housing supply
Independent Federal Member for Indi, Helen Haines, introduced a Bill to Parliament this week to increase the amount of government housing funding that will go to regional Australia. The Unlocking Regional Housing Bill specifically addresses the housing crisis in regional, rural and remote Australia, by making funding easier to access and requiring the Minister to look at action so that at least 30 per cent of funding to go to regional, rural and remote Australia.
