The Buloke Times editorial: The new state government

It is symptomatic of the state government’s treatment of rural Victoria that there have been five Ministers for Agriculture since Dan Andrews took over. With the swearing in of Ros Spence, the member for Kalkallo, she is the fifth with that portfolio, having taken over from Gayle Tierney ... the fact that she represents an electorate which covers Melbourne’s northern suburban fringe (including Craigieburn and Mickleham) does not augur well.

We did it! Leading-edge ultrasound now at Red Box Wildlife Centre

The end goal of the recent Maldon Inc Kangaroo Art Project was finally realised last Friday when the much-anticipated Mylab Five VET ultrasound machine was installed in the treatment clinic at Red Box Wildlife Shelter. The ultrasound machine will assist volunteer Senior Veterinary Surgeon Dr Mark Sayer in expediting diagnosis of internal injuries in kangaroos.

Annual show success

Sheafs tossed, utes pushed, gumboots thrown, horses paraded, Clydesdales ‘clopped’, sheep shorn, ribbons worn, bands delighted, puppets thrilled, dogs jumped, flowers impressed, quilts amazed, artwork admired, photos discussed, bars attended, food tempted, smiles beamed, children played, laughter echoed, winners cheered… yes, the 159th Maldon and Baringhup Annual Spring Show was a crowd-pleasing success last Sunday.

Planning application concern

Opposition has been expressed by nearby residents regarding a proposed planning permit application for a 16-block subdivision in Maldon on land bordered by Lowther, Reef and Polsue Streets ... It is understood that their objections include the small size of some of the blocks and the inappropriateness of the development in relation to the surrounding area.

No Voice, no Treaty: McArthur

Mrs McArthur said, “it seems the starkest dividing line in Australia is not between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people but between the inner-city elites of the eastern states and the rest of the country ... The no vote was not a vote for the status quo or against any action; in fact it has highlighted the failures of the status quo. I hope it will prove the catalyst for a full audit of the expenditure directed to Aboriginal issues across Australia so that taxpayer money can be effectively spent to close the gap without permanently constitutionally entrenching new experimental, ineffective and unnecessary division.”

Charity run brings more hope

This year proceeds from the day and the auction that night will be going to Country Hope which provides emotional and financial support to country families who have a child diagnosed with cancer or other life- threatening illness.

Wade drills life skills

Australian Soccer legend, Paul Wade, has been in Koondrook Barham this week delivering a life skills program to kids at the towns’ schools. Paul competed for Australia in the 1988 Olympic Games, captained the Socceroos from 1990-1996, representing the country in 118 international games including two World Cup campaigns and also had great success back home with two National Soccer League Championships and 1988 National Soccer League player of the year.

There was anticipation in the air as two time capsules from 25 years ago were unearthed last week ... School captains, Meiha Burns and Daisy McGlone, led the formalities, with vice captains, Lainie Hawken and Hayley Rooney, principal Fiona Miller and principal of 1998, Glenn Hall, giving an insight into school life past and present.

The Koondrook Recreation Reserve hosted the inaugural Swan Hill District Cricket Association (SHDCA) match between Nyah District and Koondrook Barham ... Koondrook Barham's bowling was lethal and after 34 overs, Nyah District was all out for 107 ... Koondrook Barham's Jade Stewart claimed four wickets in his five overs with one maiden.

Kaniva college student steps inside the southern hemisphere’s largest biomedical precinct

Mother Kimberley and daughter Hannah, who attends Kaniva College were among 120 students from across regional and rural Victoria to attend the Annual Biomedical Sciences Day at the University of Melbourne. The local student had the exciting opportunity to experience life as a biomedical scientist at the event presented by the University of Melbourne’s School of Biomedical Sciences and the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC).

At 3 o’clock the annual speed shear at the Kaniva Show kicked off with 50 entries between intermediate and open ... Some very fast times, under 40 seconds to gain a place in the 6-person final for intermediate and under 30 for the open section with a few legendary shearers making their way to the truck to shear one young merino lamb.

Quill. Who said Friday the 13th is supposed to be unlucky? It certainly wasn’t for Donald’s Annual P & A Show, which opened its gates on Friday for two days of fun for the whole family ... Of particular interest, and new to the Donald Show was Stewart Bryant’s literally cracking performance.

Health services prepare to expand

The inaugural Alliance of Rural & Regional Community Health (ARRCH) conference at Creswick on October 5-6 focused on how services are already engaging with communities to deliver innovative health programs and research, and how they could grow to meet demand.
