Baa’ing fast

On a perfect racing day, the annual Wakool Sheep Races were held at the Wakool Recreation Reserve on Saturday evening. The ewe ‘jockeys’ stayed safe behind the seven-lane barrier draw while their sheep were motivated to run faster to the finish line by the ringing of hand-held bells.

Baxter NZ wins at Gunbower

On Sunday, passionate harness racing enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the 100th anniversary of harness racing at Gunbower. The event featured a VIP lunch, speeches from industry representatives, and memories shared by racing legends who have participated in the longest harness racing track in Victoria spanning 2,630 metres. 

Concern grows over Kerang storm drainage

There are serious concerns about the drainage system in Kerang, particularly during storms. A public meeting was held at the Kerang Memorial Hall ... It was found that the aging infrastructure in Kerang is causing floodwater to accumulate in certain areas of the township.

On Saturday, the Koondrook Recreation Reserve hosted two T20 matches of the Swan Hill District Cricket Association (SHDCA). The Raiders had a good performance the previous week against Swan Hill and were expected to put up a strong fight.

Koondrook Barham's bowling was lethal and after 34 overs, Nyah District was all out for 107 ... Koondrook Barham's Jade Stewart claimed four wickets in his five overs with one maiden.

This past weekend, the Kerang Memorial Hall hosted the annual show of the Mid-Murray Orchid Club. The event was a visual and olfactory delight with stunning colours and fragrances that could rival any high-end perfume.

The 2023 Golden Rivers grand final took place against a beautiful natural backdrop as fans of football and netball gathered at the Murrabit Recreation Reserve on Saturday to witness the teams battle it out for the premiership ... On the football field, in a game of keepings off, the Lions demonstrated their fitness to play in the heat and confidence in ball handling skills.

In full bloom

A celebration took place over the weekend as the enthusiastic gardener enjoyed viewing a beautiful exhibit of orchids from around the world in Kerang for the 22nd Victorian Country Orchid Clubs Challenge. Ten displays with an average of 50 plants made their way to the Kerang Basketball Stadium, supported by the sharing of gardening knowledge and commercial stalls.

The Raiders had their fifth tough match in a row facing Woorinen on Saturday. It was a big ask for the Raiders to chalk their first win of the season against the Tigers on their home turf, and they now head to a bye for the next round.
