Fire officer pulls pin over loss of vehicle
The Group Captain for the Southern Border region of the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has resigned after being asked to return his official vehicle. Lankeys Creek volunteer brigade member, John Hawkins, claims that on May 17th he had been told by his RFS manager that his Group vehicle - a 2005 Toyota Landcruiser with 600lts of water (classed as a Cat 9) - was to be taken off him, with no replacement available ... In his resignation letter, Mr Hawkins also took the RFS to task over a number of other issues.

Lions roar
Murrabit Recreation Reserve was the setting for the Golden Rivers round 6 match between Murrabit and the reigning 2023 premiers, Hay. The Lions dominated the game, but Murrabit showed determination, managing to score two goals in the first quarter. Hay's defence was strong in the second quarter, preventing the Blues from scoring.

This month, book fair volunteers have started sorting through the collection of Vintage, Antique and Classic Books. Sorting vintage and antique are easy. Any hardcover book printed between 1918 and 1978 can be called vintage and any book printed before 1918 can be called antique.

Growers to lead change to hyper profitable crops: GRDC
Field Applied Research Australia (FAR Australia) and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) have launched a new project to transform on-farm profitability for wheat and barley growers in the high-rainfall zones of Australia. The project aims to close the gap between actual crop yields and the profitability possibilities in these zones.

Jake joins the 300-gamers
Saturday was a momentous day for the Birchip-Watchem Bulls, with club stalwart Jake Noonan playing his 300th game. The 38-year-old Noonan has spent his entire football career at George Cartwright Oval, playing all his junior and senior football with the Birchip Swans and Birchip-Watchem Bulls.
To inform decision-making for Southern growers – New farming systems project
A new farming systems project is set to shed light on how farm management decisions affect profitability and sustainability to help southern region grain growers understand the upside and downside of their decisions. The five-year project involves nine field sites … covering different soil types and rainfall zones in South Australia and Victoria, as well as biophysical modelling and economic evaluation.

Farm crime forum to be held in Locksley: Cleeland
Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland will host a farm crime forum in Locksley in June to discuss ongoing safety concerns across the region. Ms Cleeland will be joined by Shadow Minister for Police Brad Battin at the Locksley CFA building on Wednesday, June 12. Together, the pair will also hold general community safety meetings in Benalla, Broadford, and Euroa.

Australian beef genetics set to take on world
US and Canadian genetics dominate world markets, but Genetics Australia’s (GA) beef manager, Damien Thomson, says the time is right for Aussie products to make a mark on the international scene. “Many of the most used sires in Australia are either American or out of American sires,” Mr Thomson said. “But the strength of our Australian bulls, GA’s partnership with GENEX and the upcoming World Angus Forum will open doors for products to go both ways between Australia and America.”

Once cropping is over, we can start to think about having a few weekends off and enjoying the autumn/winter days. And once again the Avon Plains Banyena Landcare Group will be running its regular Winter Walks Program. These events are open to all and sundry – with an interest in nature and a willingness to walk slowly through the landscape the only prerequisites.
The Moorlort Plains chicken wars continue
Remember the protracted battle regarding the plans to build broiler farms on the Moolort Plains, west of Baringhup, in the Shire of Mount Alexander? After court hearings and the extraordinary step of building two houses out near the proposed site for the proposed broiler sheds, that battle was won by local residents.
Maldon’s living treasures
As part of a Connecting Country event held last Sunday, Mulga Urban Landcare (MULGA) Secretary Bev Phillips took a group of Landcare colleagues on a tour of some of Maldon’s oldest trees. This included trees located at the Bill Woodfull Recreation Reserve, the Police Reserve and Maldon Primary School.
