Year 2 student Lucy Tarca was recently awarded the Chief Minister’s Literacy Achievement Award in the Most Improved category. The seven-year-old was ecstatic with the prestigious nod. Proud mum Maria Carmody said she was so proud of her daughter.

Ackland sentenced – Former Kadina Memorial School teacher jailed for 14 years
Rhiannon Koch. Thomas Ackland was sentenced to 14 years in jail on 13 counts of aggravated communicating with the intention of making a child amenable to sexual activity and one of sexual abuse of a child, formerly known as maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child, in the District Court, Adelaide, on Friday, December 8. The charges, regarding children as young as 12 and up to and beyond 18, span from 2017 to just a week before his arrest in March 2021.
Roll up, roll up – More early childhood staff needed
Patrick Goldsmith. Although its opening may not be far away, the eagerly anticipated Minlaton Family Centre is in desperate need of already-qualified staff members. It is hoped staff orientation will begin in early January, and while several trainees have been put through their paces at its sister site in Maitland, only six diploma-qualified educators have been registered for Minlaton.

Isi Campbell – Making waves
Isi Campbell is doing what most teenagers only dream of… she’s travelling the world to go surfing ... Isi’s wins have been many including being named as last year’s WA Junior Surfer of the Year and collecting the 2022 Under-18 Girls State Championship Title. She has also achieved a silver medal as part of Team Australia at the International Surfing Association’s World Junior Surfing Championships in El Salvador.
No staff
The opening of a new daycare facility in Naracoorte has hit a speed bump. There are no qualified staff to man the facility ready to open at the old TAFE site in the township. The new daycare centre, with a capacity to accommodate up to 80 children, has been developed by Tony Dawson of Robe.
Surf club supreme on the south coast
Alison Bennett Taylor. Denmark Surf Lifesaving Club came home champions from the Rainbow Coast Carnival at Bremer Bay after ï¬elding its biggest team of competitors ever. Club president Sam Williams said it was the ï¬rst time the club had won the friendly carnival between south coast clubs Albany, Esperance and Denmark in nearly 20 years.

Epenarra champions of Barkly inter-school swimming carnival
Pam Dillon. The biggest inter-school swimming carnival was held in the Barkly last week and was a huge success, with Epenarra emerging as the champions. The event not only showcased students’ swimming abilities but also highlighted the camaraderie and sportsmanship among the schools.
From Denbigh to Cohuna
At the beginning of October, two ‘international’ cricketers arrived in Cohuna to spend the season playing for Nondies Cohuna Cricket Club. Archie Sussex and Karim Marcelle have both come from the UK and are settling into our little patch nicely.
