Surf club supreme on the south coast

Denmark Surf Lifesaving Club came home champions from the Rainbow Coast Carnival at Bremer Bay after fielding its biggest team of competitors ever. Club president Sam Williams said it was the first time the club had won the friendly carnival between south coast clubs Albany, Esperance and Denmark in nearly 20 years.

More than 100 clubbies travelled to Bremer for the event, held
at Blossoms Beach on the last weekend in November, with 67 nippers and about 20 youth and senior members competing to take out the shield.

The carnival is one of the longest running events of Surf Lifesaving WA’s calendar, although memories of when the first carnival was held more than 30 years ago are hazy.

Club competition officer Anthony McEwan said a plaque from one of the original carnivals won by Denmark was found in an Esperance op-shop and given to the local club.

But it was lost again before it could be returned to Denmark.

The perpetual shield made from the nose of a malibu board now awarded to the victors is harder to mislay.

“The unique thing about this carnival is for some kids it is the first taste of a carnival ever,” Anthony said.

“It was awesome to have so many new families there.
