Constraints strategy not feasible but will proceed to business case
Jan Beer. The Feasibility of Relaxing Constraints in Northern Victoria Final Report has been released by Victorian Water Minister Shing. The report recommends proceeding to the next phase of the Constraints Measures Project, which will involve the development of a detailed business case. This will be the third attempt by the Victorian Government to provide a workable business case.
Murray crays released
150 Murray crayfish were released in Barham on Friday after many of the iconic species were relocated during the 2022 and early 2023 blackwater events. During the flood event, blackwater poured out of forests that had already had long periods of inundation with environmental water, contributing to poor water quality within the river system.
Dreams achieved: Norton wins Hattah

Project role led to full time job
Corryong firefighter, Cath Davies, will forever remember the night that the 2019-20 Black Summer fires tore through the Corryong district.
Heavily pregnant with her first child, Cath watched as Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) crews headed towards Towong to protect lives and property directly in the path of the out-of-control bushfire.
Wetlands stage nears finish
Stage one of the Corryong Wetlands project is getting closer to finalisation as local contractor Greg Hillier puts the finishing touches on the two creek crossings. “We are really happy with the survival rate of our tree and shrub plantings and working in with Corryong College who have had eight official visits to the wetlands in the last two years,” said co-president, John Murphy.
Rate rise kept to a minimum
The Towong Shire Council has adopted its 2024/25 Budget which focuses on roads maintenance. “We recognise that we’re facing challenging economic times and on that basis, we believe the budget strikes the right balance between ensuring your rates are being invested efficiently and effectively while meeting all the needs of our community,” said Towong mayor, Cr Andrew Whitehead.

Respect announce $15 million redevelopment of Avonlea
Respect, a leading not-for-profit aged care provider in regional Australia, has announced a $15 million redevelopment project for its residential aged care home, Avonlea, located in Nhill.
The project, set to commence in the second half of 2024, will secure ongoing services and support for older people and their families across Nhill and the surrounding region for generations to come.

Devastating water buybacks on the way for Northern Victoria: Lovell
The Commonwealth government has betrayed Northern Victoria by announcing further water buybacks from irrigation districts that will drive up costs for irrigators and devastate farming communities. Federal Water Minister Tanya Plibersek announced on 4 July that as part of the plan to recover 450GL of water in the Murray-Darling Basin, the Government will put out an open tender to purchase 70GL of water from the southern Basin ... latest plan does not apportion additional recovery fairly between states, but merely seeks to buy the cheapest water wherever it is, which could hurt Victoria further.
Regional students left behind as absentee rates rise: Cleeland
Regional Victorian students are struggling to keep engaged in the classroom, with new data revealing a concerning increase in rates of student absenteeism across the regions. Department of Education data has confirmed 354,549 days of school were missed by Year 7 students in regional Victorian Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 2023 - an increase of 33.6 per cent compared to 2019.

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) says the Victorian agriculture industry can propel the state’s economy and surpass $20 billion dollars of food and fibre exports by 2030 if the Victorian Government focusses on road maintenance, lowering costs and improving freight efficiency. Live sheep export legislation passes Australian Parliament
Australian Alliance for Animals. The Australian Senate has this week passed historic legislation enshrining the phase out of live sheep exports into law. The Export Control Amendment (Ending Live Sheep Exports by Sea) Act 2024 prohibits exporting live sheep by sea from Australia by May 1, 2028 and unlocks a $107 million industry adjustment package. Australian Alliance for Animals spokesperson, Dr. Jed Goodfellow, welcomed the passage of the legislation, describing it as a pivotal moment in the history of animal welfare in Australia.
