Libraries grant for regional, rural and remote libraries

The LBW Trust in collaboration with Friends of Libraries Australia (FOLA), has announced that 79 country libraries throughout regional, rural and remote Australia are the recipients of much needed funding through the Trust’s Australian Country Libraries 2024 Program. Libraries in remote areas serve as essential community hubs where people can gather, learn and connect.

John Whitehead. These photos were taken by Henry James Mercer Hobday, manager of the Bank of Victoria, who was stationed in Nhill from 1913 until 1921. Photography was his hobby so he developed and printed his photos at home in the bank.

2024 State Finals

The 2024 State Finals took place in Bendigo alongside the Australian Sheep and Wool Show. The weekend showcased some impressive performances in shearing and wool handling.

Fifty years to the day

Last Saturday, July 20, 2024, prior to scheduled games of club football, netball and hockey, former players, officials and others gathered at Donald’s A. A. Dunstan Stadium to celebrate the North-Central District’s history-making victory in the Victorian Country Football Championships at Warrnambool, on Saturday, July 20, 1974.

Maldon and beyond: Really Local conversations

An interactive conversation between Maldon locals and the current Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire will take place at Maldon Neighbourhood Centre this Sunday 21 July from 2pm. Unveiling the beauty of art in gold

As funding stalls and falls behind – regional shows out in the cold

Much-loved Agricultural Shows across Victoria are taking an unfair hit, with the State Government funding frozen and failing to keep pace with the rising cost-of-living. Despite soaring inflation, the Agriculture and Pastoral Society Grants Program has remained stagnant at $300,000 in total funding, with a $10,000 maximum for each Show. In real terms, funding for Agricultural Shows has dramatically dropped. Staggeringly, there is less funding available than 19 years ago.

Charlotte takes on world’s best

How many young girls have the opportunity to compete overseas in the World Line Dancing Championships? For eleven-years-old Charlotte McCarthy, daughter of Clint and Alecia McCarthy (formerly Alecia Campbell) this dream became a reality, when on July 12 Charlotte and Alecia jetted over to Blackpool in the UK to join twelve other girls from the Lennox Head “Heart of Dance School”.

Buybacks begin for political plan

Buybacks have begun as the Federal Government seeks to add to the huge volumes of held environmental water ... The plan appears to have moved past the noble intention of a balanced plan with a triple bottom line. Now fuelled by political motives, the political plan risks the viability of irrigation companies, food-producing industries, and locks many young Australians out of the chance to be an irrigation farmer.

Melbourne firm awarded Koondrook’s $500,000 transition fund

Gannawarra Shire Council staff have awarded the $500,000 State Government’s Community Development Fund to Melbourne based Urban Enterprises. The $500,000 grant from the Victorian Labor Government was in response to the Andrews – Allan Government’s decision to end over 150 years of native forestry in the state. Urban Enterprises edged out three rival bids for the contract, two being Barham-based and from Bendigo.

Rookie Judd Chislett dominates senior Victorian motocross MX2 championship

In a stunning debut season, rookie rider Judd Chislett from Pyramid Hill has firmly established himself as the frontrunner in the 2024 Senior Victorian Motocross MX2 C Grade Championship. Despite a broken collarbone at the start of the year, the 16-year-old has bounced back in impressive fashion, winning every race he has contested so far.

Firewood theft cripples parks and forests

The silent and devastating toll of people stealing wood from Victoria’s forests and parks has been revealed as public land authorities announce a crackdown on escalating illegal firewood take and habitat destruction threatening the survival of native wildlife and Aboriginal cultural heritage. In 2023 alone, firewood thieves damaged or destroyed more than 9,200 native trees or cleared roughly 462 hectares of public land in Victoria ...
