Roads crumble as funding decreases
As Victoria’s road network continues to crumble, new data has revealed funding for road resurfacing work has dropped to a five-year low. Figures provided to State Parliament show that the money spent on resurfacing and resealing contracts in the 2023/24 financial year was just 18 per cent of the previous year, dropping a staggering $163.8 million across the state.
“Driven” to exhibit work of local artists
The Charlton Courthouse Gallery has a new exhibition opening soon — “Driven”, featuring the work of five local artists. The exhibition explores the notion of being “driven” to make works of art.
Landholders urged to make submissions
Member for Mallee, Dr. Anne Webster, has written to landholders whose farms, environment, amenity and safety on their land is threatened by the VNI-West transmission project and proposed wind turbine installations, encouraging them to make a submission to the State Government’s Developing the 2025 Victorian Transmission Plan. “I’ve just seen the map and despite earlier indications of six Victorian Renewable Energy Zones, clearly Mallee is the prime target in Labor’s sights,” Dr Webster said.
Virtual fencing one step closer to reality for Victorian farmers: VFF
The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) has welcomed the partnership between Agriculture Victoria and Halter in trialling the use of virtual fencing technology at the government’s Ellinbank Smartfarm. VFF President Emma Germano said the move was a forward step towards making the technology accessible to Victorian farmers.

Jazz in July
On Sunday July 21, lucky music fans from near and far were fortunate to attend Jazz in July featuring The Martini Set, at the Charlton Park Multipurpose Complex. Hosting the event for the fourth time, the Charlton Arts committee was pleased with the number in attendance, although less than previous years.

The Grassland Society of Southern Australia (GSSA) is looking to rebuild by engaging with a new generation of farmers and agricultural consultants. The society has connected farmers, scientists and consultants for 65 years and members gave its future a big vote of confidence at the annual conference in Bendigo on July 17-18.
Health system must find more funding
John Malham, patient. Recently I spent two weeks in a semi-major regional hospital that caters for its town population of twenty thousand and the surrounding areas 70 thousand population. I had no intention of writing this article but having witnessed the forceful nature of the hospital’s discharge team, I began taking notes and interviewing people involved in all aspects of the hospital’s running.

Castlemaine Festival emerges from administration
The Board of Castlemaine State Festival announced last week that it will commence planning for a 2026 festival and expects to appoint a new artistic director later this year. In March the board had stated that it was entering voluntary administration and that specialists from Deloitte Financial Advisory had been appointed to "assess the options available to restructure the operations, preserve the legacy of the festival and determine a path forward."

The opening of the facility under new management was a celebration of the work and dedication to retain medical services in the Barham facility and a positive step towards a bright future with a team dedicated to quality care.
Mobile coverage extended
Residents and visitors to the Upper Murray are now enjoying improved mobile phone coverage and connectivity, with the recent construction of three new Telstra mobile base stations in the region. Two towers have been built at Koetong and Burrowye and a new small-cell base station has been activated south-west of Cudgewa under the federal government’s Mobile Black Spot Program.

The Koondrook Barham River Raiders travelled to Nyah to face the top team on the Senior ladder, Nyah Nyah West United. The overcast and windy conditions made one goal end more favourable for scoring ... By the end of the first quarter, the Raiders had scored one goal and one behind, while Nyah had scored four goals and four behinds.
A league of their own
AFL Victoria – which operates under the all-powerful AFL umbrella – is in the business of sport. Getting people to play it, and watch it. Only, AFL Victoria doesn’t want to play with anyone unless everything goes its way. If it doesn’t, AFL Victoria picks up its ball and goes home.

Alliance prepares for fire season
The Softwoods Working Group has engaged major stakeholders to develop a strategy to safeguard the softwood forestry industry in the Murray Region Hub ahead of the upcoming bushfire season. A $13M forestry funding package from the NSW government is aimed at protecting essential timber supplies in the region and will support key fire prevention, detection and response initiatives.
Barber goes for gold
Australian javelin thrower, Kelsey-Lee Barber, who spent some of her formative years in Corryong, is focused on adding an Olympic gold medal in Paris to go with the bronze she won in Tokyo in 2020. It was her family’s relocation to Australia in her teenage years that put the then Kelsey-Lee Roberts on her athletics pathway.
Victoria’s planning guidelines for transmission infrastructure threaten food security: VFF
The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) has raised serious concerns over the recently released planning guidelines for transmission infrastructure, saying the Victorian government continues to ignore critical farmer advice on planned transmission projects. VFF President Emma Germano said that while the area targeted for infrastructure development would be further refined, the current approach is problematic.
