The Charlton Courthouse Gallery has a new exhibition opening soon — “Driven”, featuring the work of five local artists. The exhibition explores the notion of being “driven” to make works of art.
Genevieve Navarre is a potter and sculptor who lived in Japan for forty years. She began working with clay in Japan in her twenties and now has a studio in the Charlton district where she digs her own clay, fires her own works in a wood fired kiln, and makes her own unique glazes. This will be the first time ceramics are displayed at the gallery.
Kate Giakimis, a long-time resident of Charlton, is seldom to be seen without a piece of work in her hands. She weaves, paints, spins and crochets and in the process has created an enormous amount of work. Many of Kate’s wonderful weavings will be adorning the walls.
Joe Durie, a welder by trade, loves all things steel and enjoys producing works which highlight the beauty and the versatility of the material. He has a large sculpture which currently sits atop Mt Wycheproof.
Joel Thiesz, a shearer, born and raised in Charlton has in recent years been creating sculptures from welded steel. He recently completed a large piece which will soon be unveiled in Gordon Park. Both Joe and Joel will have a few of their welded sculptures on display.
Chris Wyatt, who recently had an exhibition of his paintings at the Gallery and has curated this exhibition, will also have several paintings on display “to fill the gaps”.
“Driven” will open on Saturday August 3, from 3 p.m.. Come along for afternoon tea, meet the artists and enjoy the ambience of the historic old building. The exhibition will be open on weekends till Sunday August 25, 11 a.m. till 3 p.m..
