Community plans to bolster regional drought resilience: Watt, Spence
Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Murray Watt and Victorian Minister for Agriculture Ros Spence announced the Drought Resilience Plans for the Gippsland, Goulburn and Wimmera Southern Mallee regions have been finalised. These are the first of nine regional communities across the state to develop community-led Regional Drought Resilience Plans through the Future Drought Fund’s Regional Drought Resilience Planning Program, jointly funded by the Albanese and Allan Governments.
Harcourt rises to the challenge testing riders of all ages
The Harcourt Pony Club in Central Victoria is not one of the biggest in the state but certainly one of the most innovative and thoughtful. It realises that in addition to teaching children the basics of how to ride and look after their horse, pony club also needs to challenge young minds and be fun.
Versatility show a first for ranch riders at Benalla
The Ranch Horse Association of Australia’s first Versatility Ranch Show at Benalla was a success for competitors and enjoyable for spectators ... In ranch riding, riders ran a combination of patterns one and eight, with modified walk/trot patterns for the green rider and equestrians with disabilities (EWD) classes.
Upgrade continues at Birchip Cemetery
Back in 2021, the Birchip Cemetery Trust received $22,000 from the Department of Health’s Cemetery Sector Governance Support Program to upgrade the original lawn cemetery and a further $18,000 from the “Cargill Cares Cropping for the Birchip Community” program ... concrete plinths could be installed in all six rows of the initial lawn cemetery to rehouse the plaques that used to sit on individual concrete blocks or directly on the lawn.

Backflips Against Bullying back at Donald High School
Alyssa Walker. For the second year in a row, Backflips Against Bullying has put on a parkour performance at Donald High School, weaving tools and life lessons in amongst their dynamic tricks ... Year 7-11 students all gathered under the cover of the Big Shed to watch Luca and Sam’s bombastic performance, interspersed with a variety of tips and tricks on how to de-escalate bullying situations.
All set for the Show!
Not to be missed this Sunday (15 October) is the Maldon & Baringhup Agricultural Show, which runs from 9am to 4pm (with free entertainment for the children starting at 10am) at the Maldon racecourse ... The [Tarrangower] Times caught up with Kristina Forbes last weekend, who was in the process of finalising arrangements for entries into six (that’s right, six!) categories of the floral art section of the Show.
Quirky small town vibe for new production
Castlemaine Theatre Company is bringing Under Milk Wood to the stage, and the production features a significant Maldon contingent. Set in a seaside town and written by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, it features glimpses into the dreams and lives of various eccentric townsfolk.
Of ants and plants – how flowers led to the rise of the many
Geoff Park. I recently watched an excellent short video by PBS Eons on the rise of ants and the importance of flowering plants in the story ... This increase [of ants] seems to parallel the rise of flowering plants, a rise which involved many symbiotic relationships ... These complex relationships were very apparent to me as I wandered around the bush at our place, camera in hand.
Forest firefighters at the forefront of bushfire response: Dimopoulos
Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) is stronger than ever ahead of the upcoming bushfire season with a significant boost to its workforce and rapid response capability. Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos announced the Allan Labor Government has bolstered crew numbers to combat bushfires – investing $21.7 million to create 100 ongoing and 54 fixed term Forest Fire Operations Officer positions, adding to the 550 seasonal firefighters recruited to work with FFMVic this season.
Returning water to Gippsland’s Traditional Owners: Shing
Minister for Water Harriet Shing announced that Southern Rural Water has issued Gunaikurnai Land and Water Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) two licences for cultural water use – one of 200 megalitres at Buchan Munji, as well as 500 megalitres of water for the Tambo River ... The Labor Government is working with Traditional Owners to improve their access to water and their involvement in water management, benefiting Traditional Owners and all Victorians through the release of Water is Life: Traditional Owner Access to Water Roadmap.
Our fallen heroes will be forever remembered
Corryong College teacher, Stephen Learmonth ... has undertaken his own project to record the biographies of other servicemen from the region and the Corryong Courier will be printing a selection of these stories in the lead up to Remembrance Day this year on November 11 ... Frank Leslie Butler was born on the 13th of April, 1919 at Tallangatta, Victoria.
Corryong puts on a great show
The 114th Corryong Show at the Corryong Recreation Reserve on Saturday has been hailed a great success, particularly in the face of similar events across the country going into recess. The twilight event again proved popular with healthy numbers going through the gate.
Regions need to feed into the grid – communities must be consulted
The failure to properly consult with regional communities affected by large-scale renewable energy projects and transmission infrastructure risks delaying or de- railing the transition to a decarbonised energy grid, according to Federal Member for Indi, Helen Haines. In a submission to the Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner’s Community Engagement Review, Dr Haines has called for regional communities to be meaningfully involved in the planning of renewable energy projects and receive structural benefit and regional development from these projects.
Micro abattoir tour excites
The need for humane and accessible abattoir facilities has never been greater as producers are forced out of larger facilities and face ever-increasing costs of transporting their animals. Last week’s meeting and tour with the Murray Plains Meat Co-Operative (MPMC) was well attended with everyone being brought up to speed on how the project is progressing.
Horseless racing well attended
The Gunbower Racing Club’s annual race day was held on Saturday, but in yet another blow to the club, the 45ml of rain received ... saw all horse racing cancelled ...the club went ahead with all planned off-track events and was blown away by the support of the almost 2,000 people who still attended ... “Our track was in beautiful condition, and that’s what made it so hard."
