Sports Shear Australia Nationals 2023 was held on the 21st and 22nd October at Jamestown SA ... The woolhandling board saw Kirsty Bone 2nd in the open and Sigourney Williams 2nd in the novice.
Beautiful day for the garden walk
After the wintery "wash-out" of the 2022 Garden Walk, the Nhill Lions Club members were ever hopeful for a fine sunny day this year for their Annual Garden Walk. Their wishes were certainly granted as the sunshine and magnificent blue skies greeted everyone from early morning, last Sunday, right throughout the day.

A delectable lentil lasagne, cooked by Nhill local, Wendy Bywaters was declared the winning dish by celebrity chef, Tim Bone, at West Wimmera Health Service’s Cooking Competition recently ... the region’s quality produce and ingredients were put right in the spotlight.

Dressage day supports unit that helps horses out of holes
The dressage competition at Shirley Heights at Gladysdale in Victoria was one of many on a busy October weekend but it was special, as money raised from the event went to the Large Animal Rescue Service in Victoria. Unless it’s happened to you, you may not realise that big animals like horses and cattle can get themselves into terrible pickles falling down holes or getting hopelessly tangled in fences or creeks.

The Naked Farmer (18-year CFA volunteer). Have you ever been a volunteer? It feels great, doesn’t it? Imagine if you were responsible for putting those volunteers’ life at added risk? For an organisation like the CFA which relies predominantly on volunteers, why wouldn’t it stop and ask the question, "Why are we allowing the added risk of Transmission Lines to our volunteers and those we serve to protect?"

Planned burning, mechanical treatments and planned burn preparation are our highest priority into late spring and early summer because if a bushfire starts, these activities will help us suppress fires.
Mallee Root Round Up B&S Ball: Revellers back in their hundreds
The Mallee Root Round Up committee was delighted to welcome almost nine hundred revellers back to the Mallee Root Roundup B&S ball last Saturday, October 21, after a three-year hiatus caused by unprecedented circumstances. In the 1980s there were up to 500 balls across Australia, but now it is more like thirty.
Celtic Piping Club concert
If you’re interested in Celtic music, here’s an event not to be missed: the Celtic Piping Club is hosting an event at the Ray Bradfield Room in Castlemaine on Saturday 4 November, starting at 8pm. Internationally acclaimed duo Colm Broderick on uilleannn pipes and Francis Cunningham on concertina will be performing.
Tony, Mac and a handful of hope

School buildings remain empty
Baringhup Primary School was an important community hub until its doors closed in 2017, following an exodus of students. What has happened at the school since then? The answer is: not a lot.

Who would have thought that politics would breed dishonesty and half-truths? The latest push by Federal Labor water minister, Tanya Plibersek, is a perfect example ... Plibersek’s Bill passed the Lower House last week, with a potential vote in the Senate on November 9 ... no appetite to wait for the outcome of the Productivity Commission’s Interim Report due in December, shock horror.
