Resilience ignited at BCG event, Swan Hill

Igniting Resilience, hosted by BCG at the Lower Mallee Inn at Swan Hill recently, lived up to its name.  Young farmers and agribusiness professionals heard from guest speakers The Unbreakable Farmer Warren Davies, farmers Simone Murdoch (Swan Hill), Jarrod Kemp (Nullawil) and Will Simpson (Berriwillock), who shared how they navigate the challenges of life and farming.  

Murray–Darling Basin Ministerial Council communique, 31 March 2023

The Authority discussed the ongoing consequences of recent floods through the Basin, in particular the tragic fish deaths this month in the Barka-Darling River at Menindee. They expressed their deep concern about the impact on local communities and the river environment and commended the coordinated efforts of water management agencies and the NSW Police to address community concerns, to ensure potable water supply and to effectively remove a great many dead fish from the river.  

Apprentice jockeys shine at Donald

Donald Racing Centre held its first meeting for 2023, on Sunday, March 26. On the day, two women apprentice jockeys celebrated success with a win each in races five and six.

Open win for 18yo a highlight of her campdrafting career

Campdrafting as a sport evolved naturally from young station hands competing around cattle yards and drovers' camps in NSW and Queensland in the 1880s. It’s generally been a sport dominated by men, but at Lockington in Northern Victoria earlier this month, the women took their fair share of the prizes.

Kangaroo art project

Here’s a heads-up for an imaginative art installation being presented by Maldon Inc. Twelve 1.5 metre high kangaroos, along with some joeys, will be showcased in shop windows during the 2023 Maldon In Winter Festival, which will be running from 23 June to 9 July.

Become a Maldon CERT member

Ambulance Victoria (AV) is looking for more recruits to join the Maldon Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Maldon’s CERT is made up of members who provide support to the Maldon township 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

First responder training

Maldon and Harcourt Fire Brigade members, Maldon Community Response Team (CERT) volunteers and Ambulance Victoria paramedics came together last Friday night at the Maldon Fire Station for a two-and-a-half-hour training session. The CFA volunteers were instructed in CPR and in manual lifting techniques for moving patients safely.

127th Tambo Valley Picnic Races, Easter Sunday, 9 April 2023

This year it is our 127th running of the races, and with the autumn rainfall we've had so far the track and grounds are in excellent condition. So the Committee is very hopeful for a successful year!

All fired up after 43 years

After a 43-year hiatus, the 209 team of the Leitchville Fire Brigade has fired up again. Sporting shirts in the original team colours, the team entered its first competition after just six weeks of training.

Strangle hold

A recent report on the Water Supply and Demand in the Southern Murray-Darling Basin released by the Victorian Government conveys the catastrophic convergence of events that are unfolding under a plan to “restore the balance” and “save the Murray.” The report brings into focus the extent to which water scarcity will increase in the future as existing and new permanent horticulture plantings explode below the natural constraints of the river system and fight for dam storage.

Murray votes, Dalton returns

The seat of Murray has seen pink, re-electing Helen Dalton as Member for Murray. Mrs Dalton increased her popularity, obtaining 13,329 votes (48.45 per cent) since leaving the Shooters, Fishers, Farmers Party in 2022 and running as an independent in the electorate larger than Scotland ... In a changing government, Mrs Dalton said she will be looking to build on the momentum of the last four years.

Marching for mental health

A four-day charity walk from Bonegilla to Corryong last week has raised more than $25,000 to date to promote awareness of veterans’ mental health isssues. Corryong cafè owner, Stuart Spratt, started the ‘March On’ walk three years ago and was accompanied by nine supporters who finished the trek with him at the Corryong cenotaph last Friday afternoon.

Malcolm Chisholm: The first to fall

Honor Auchinleck. Timing and circumstances ensure some wartime tragedies are more defining than others and so it was with Malcolm Chisholm. He was the first Australian to die and the first of some 60,000 Australians who lost their lives on the First World War battlefields. His death has resonated through more than a century and well beyond the Upper Murray.

On the weekend, Sarah Jarvis was awarded first place in the 17 Years Open Reserve Graceful Calisthenics Solo competition at George Jenkins Theatre in Frankston ... Calisthenics is a form of strength training consisting of a variety of movements and participants have to perform a set of exercises in competition.

2900 quarantine turkey poults nearly ready to fly the coop: DAFF

Australia’s state-of-the-art avian quarantine facility is filling the role of midwife to nearly 3000 turkey poults in Victoria. The team at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) facility in Mickleham together with industry experts have nurtured 2900 turkey eggs from Canada during their minimum 13-week quarantine period.

Echuca Moama Discovery this Saturday

Local residents are encouraged to come along to Echuca Library this Saturday for the annual Echuca Moama Discovery Day. The event will showcase over 50 groups from Echuca Moama and surrounds, ranging from local service and sporting clubs, to singing, art, craft, history groups and many other community organisations.

From Saturday 25th March Horsham Regional Art Gallery invites the community to celebrate up and coming Spanish born, Ararat-based artist Juana Beltran in her transformative reflection of her time in the Australian desert. Formed from the desert plains, the human-like figures which form the body of work in the exhibition project shadows that represent a reflection of our other selves.
