A celebration of mobile eye care
Established in 2013, the Flying Doctor Mobile Eye Care service delivers comprehensive, accessible eye examinations to rural Victorian communities ... Despite the fact that more than 90% of vision impairment is preventable or treatable, missing regular eye health checks or treatment is too often a reality of rural living, and risks more serious future health concerns.
Maldon community battery information session
Those attending put the presenters through a rigorous interrogation about how the project would work and what benefits it would bring. Maldonians are no pushover - even when it comes to issues that most are in favour of – and demanded details while showing an awareness of the finer technical points of battery operations.
After six months closed, Maldon Caravan Park now open
If you have guests arriving for Christmas and over the summer break, Maldon Caravan Park is once again an option for accommodation. After more than six months of closure, Gay and Des Stormon were brought in to have the Park ready for the recent Maldon Folk Festival.
How’s business? Le Sel, Maldon’s petite French deli
“Well, it’s very interesting because before Le Sel I’d never been in hospitality at all. Le Sel has been a totally different direction. I spent about 45 years of my life mainly doing interior restoration work, spending a lot of time in Melbourne, doing historical restoration, working for the National Trust and so forth. Then we came to Maldon": Serge, Le Sel.
Family cooks up a keen contest
On Sunday the inaugural Lebner family bake-off was held in memory of family matriarch and renowned cook, Enid Lebner. This year’s challenge was one of Enid’s favourite recipes and a diverse field of entrants lined up for the hotly contested Yo-Yo Classic trophy.
Dairy industry prepares for challenges ahead
The December 2023 Situation and Outlook Report from Dairy Australia forecasts milk production to remain steady over the 2023/24 season despite the anticipated impacts of the El Niño weather event ... "High production costs, Australia’s price competitiveness of dairy products and economic constraints on consumers are emerging risks": Eliza Redfern.
Broken promise leads to paltry payout
The Victorian government’s support package to stranded native timber workers, announced on Friday, is a final slap in the face to an industry on death row, according to Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Emma Kealy ... "Industry leaders confirm that in effect haulage operators will be offered just 50 cents in the dollar for the next year and harvesting contractors 30 cents in the dollar for the remaining term of their contract, some of which conclude as soon as mid- 2024. This does not offer the length of security they deserve," Ms Kealy said.
Leitchville Live
For a small town, they sure can put on a big show. A new initiative has seen an award winning indie folk duo take to the stage in Leitchville for their first and only performance in northern Victoria – and there’s more to come. Saije, an indie folk duo from Bellingen in New South Wales, came to Leitchville off the back of an extensive European tour.
Water Bill opens old wounds
Communities who carried the burden of a Basin Plan corrupted by politics are once again looking down the barrel of mass buybacks. The impacts of water buybacks cannot be understated as communities were ripped apart, football clubs closed, huge areas of food production and habitat provision were dried out, industries retracted, driving increased costs and undermining sustainability, and the price of water was sent out of reach of many young farmers.
“The doctor won’t see you now…“
Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) is once again under the spotlight as the Barham Hospital had been left with no doctors after the contractual arrangement with Ochre Health ran out on November 30 ... Having the multimillion-dollar facility sitting idle due to a bureaucratic standoff has greatly frustrated local doctors and distressed patients seeking treatment.

The court heard the 29-year-old worker was using a telehandler to stack hay bales at the Gerang Gerung property in November 2020 when the raised boom and bale lifting attachment made contact with overhead power lines.
Salvation Army’s Kaniva Corps closure
“The Salvos have played an important part in the Kaniva community for a long time, so it is sad to see them leaving. From the fellowship the church offered to the much-loved Op Shop and the many times they provided outreach and help, often completely unheralded, their departure will undoubtedly leave a hole in the community”: Tim Meyer, West Wimmera Mayor.

A summer reminder from CFA and RSPCA … time to consider our pets
As the summer arrives, CFA, with RSPCA Victoria, is reminding Victorians to consider their pets and livestock in their bushfire survival plan. While families should always put their own safety ahead of their pets in an emergency, it is important to have bedding, food, and water ready to go for them should a fire cause concern.
