On Sunday the inaugural Lebner family bake-off was held in memory of family matriarch and renowned cook, Enid Lebner.
This year’s challenge was one of Enid’s favourite recipes and a diverse field of entrants lined up for the hotly contested Yo-Yo Classic trophy.
Her daughter and chief judge, Leonie Wilson, aided by steward Deid Lebner, said that she was assessing the entries based on the yo-yo being true to Enid’s own technique and style.
First prize was taken out by Julie Jarvis, closely followed by Sarah Park (Wilson) and Emma Klippel (Jarvis).
Fourth place was the controversial entry by John Lebner, who was the only one to achieve the correct ‘special occasion’ yo-yo pattern but broke the rules by using a nonconforming icing recipe! Other entrants were Matt Wilson, Jason Harrap, Nat Jarvis (Armstrong) and Nat Larkin (Lebner).
Nat Jarvis commented “I got stitched up with the recipe because I can’t read her handwriting!” The wooden spoon was taken out by Tahnia Lebner (Whitsed) who should clearly stick to sport, not baking.
Spectators attended with other baked goods from Enid’s recipe book.
Rumours are already circulating as to what next year’s recipe theme will be.
