Salvation Army’s Kaniva Corps closure

Recent stories

The Salvation Army has announced the closure of its Kaniva Corps, effective from January 7, 2024. Colonel Kelvin Merrett, the Divisional Commander and former Corps Officer of Kaniva and Broughton, expressed his sadness over this decision in a recent letter to the Division. The closure comes due to several challenges, including the loss of essential income following the shutdown of the Bordertown Thrift Shop, diminished mission activities in Kaniva, and a shortage of officers to sustain the Corps in Victoria.

Despite the closure of the Kaniva branch, the Broughton Corps will continue operations, relying on lay leadership for support. Efforts are underway to transition the Kaniva Thrift Shop to local community ownership, with discussions ongoing.

Colonel Merrett expressed gratitude for the dedication and impact of the Kaniva Corps, which has been a significant part of the community and spiritual life for 140 years. Many former members have carried its legacy into new communities. Mayor of West Wimmera Shire Council Tim Meyer said, “The Salvos have played an important part in the Kaniva community for a long time, so it is sad to see them leaving. From the fellowship the church offered to the much-loved Op Shop and the many times they provided outreach and help, often completely unheralded, their departure will undoubtedly leave a hole in the community.”

“We are fortunate that we still have others in our community who are able to provide support and care when needed, and remain hopeful that the Op Shop will find new owners and continue to operate,” Tim concluded.

A final Thanksgiving service will be held at Kaniva on December 31 at 4pm , featuring a BBQ tea where attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share. Meanwhile, the Broughton Salvation Army will maintain its Sunday fellowship services, with Major Karen Armstrong’s final day being January 7, 2024, at 10:30 AM.

No future plans for the Salvation Army buildings in Kaniva have been confirmed yet.
