Council delegate pushes worth of keeping eye on highway progress

Narrandera Shire Council delegate Cr Peter Dawson believes that the council must continue its representation on the Newell Highway Taskforce or the northern end of the highway will continue to be upgraded and very little done at the southern end. However he said it was evident that most of the works along the Newell Highway were being carried out in the northern section and very little in the Southern.

‘There’s trouble at t’mill’

Local CFA brigades attended a fire at Walkers sawmill in Corryong on Friday night which destroyed electrical equipment, necessary for the production of kindling. Two on-site mill workers heard a series of popping noises, similar to gunshots, around 10.30pm before noticing flames coming from the main processing area.

Super support

Local CFA volunteers were seen in trucks and in Corryong’s main street on Good Friday, raising money for The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Appeal and once again the Upper Murray community and holiday visitors dug deep for the cause.

Local hemp dreams heard

Farmers, community members and potential investors gathered at cluBarham this week to learn more about an exciting opportunity for the region.  Attendees listened to how the growing, processing and value-adding of industrial hemp could provide great opportunities to producers, in employment and provide a boost to the local economy.

Greetings from Nhill

John Williams. It came in the form of postcards, and here are just a few from the early days, well before emails and even when the telephone was a novelty. On one side of a postcard, there is usually a brief note to a friend or relative, but on the other, it’s Nhill’s history….

Maureen Donnellon. James Phelps established his blacksmith’s foundry at Birchip’s five ways in 1890 ... Both plough and monument were first unveiled for the Centenary of Birchip in 1982 and it is wonderful to see them back where they belong, this time, together ... St. Arnaud’s “almost””ˆBird-of-Paradise

Anne Hughes. The ground-walking, weak-flying birds you see on your trip down the Sunraysia Highway to Ballarat are one of Australia’s most amazing birds - the White-winged Chough (pron. chuff).  With their sooty-black livery, startling ruby-red eyes and, when they take to the air, black-edged white wings they are obviously not crows (we don’t have ’em down here) or ravens either.

Some practical tips for being prepared

At recent Birchip and Wycheproof Probus Club meetings, an intriguing question from the Buloke Shire Council’s Community Recovery Team kicked off an essential conversation: “If you had to leave your home in a hurry, what would you take?” This question opened up a broader discussion on emergency preparedness, emphasising the need to know what to pack and where to find reliable information.

Church reaches milestone

A decade ago the future of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Cudgewa looked bleak. The floor was riddled with white ants and the inside was in great need of patching and painting. Much discussion was held on whether it would remain open considering the nature of the repairs needed and dwindling church attendance.
