McNeil pays tribute to mentor

Deane Lester, a respected industry form analyst, as well as a mentor for Jye McNeil, passed away on Thursday after a short battle with cancer; he was 54 ... “He's going to be riding with me in every race today,” said an emotional McNeil.

Cejay Graham steals the show at Port on Sunday

After being forced to the sidelines following a racing accident last April, Cejay Graham returned triumphantly with a riding double at the Port Macquarie race meeting on Sunday. At her first track appearance since an injury enforced layoff, the popular apprentice was able to steer Heir Apparent to the lead down the home running to score in the ATM2HIRE Handicap.

There’s nothing standard about these versatile ex-racehorses

The honest Standardbred was once the poor relation of the racehorse world. While the Thoroughbreds had a chance of finding a life after racing, the Standardbred was far less likely to get that opportunity. In the past 20 years – and especially since 2015 when Harness Racing Victoria set up its “HERO” rehoming program – things have really changed and they can be found in any number of occupations, without a sulky in sight.

Tearing up the asphalt in his 1966 Mustang, known fondly as S1CKO, in front of the 100,000-strong crowd in Canberra earlier this month, Myers didn’t disappoint, defeating winner of both the Masters and Championship at 'Nats 33 Rick Fuller and his new ride FULLONX, ahead of Michael Pratten in SPASTIC.

Thoroughbred breeding season draws to a close on the Darling Downs

The Darling Downs is arguably the centre of the Queensland thoroughbred breeding industry with numerous large and small horse studs scattered around the region from Cambooya to Gladfield and from Warwick to Greenmount where rich soil is ideal for growing good horse pasture. The breeding season starts in August and continues through till December with the first foals born in August and mares begin to be served by stallions in September.

Ardlethan racecourse up for sale

The future of Ardlethan Picnic Racing Club appears to be murky after the land on which it is located, which is a smaller part of the larger ‘Warri’ property, was put up for sale earlier this month. Located three kilometres south of Ardlethan, 'Warri' is one of the most well-known properties in Southern NSW, and that is because for over 60 years, the iconic Ardlethan picnic meeting has been conducted there on the banks of the Mirrool Creek.

Lord of Light wins Cooktown Cup

Ricky Ludwig will now weigh up whether to send Lord of Light to Brisbane for a $200,000 race after the Tolga trainer added another Cup to his record at Cooktown. Given a “10 out of 10” ride by jockey Frank Edwards, the even money favourite was an easy winner of the 1760m feature event on Saturday, even if the margin was only a quarter of a length.
