The March long weekend brings with it many entertaining events throughout the region. Just a hop, skip and a jump away, will be Beulah’s not-to-be-missed Wide Open Spaces Festival; a weekend of music, art, food and fun at the Beulah Recreation Reserve.
Addressing El Niño misconceptions: BCG”ˆTrials Review Day
Understanding climate indicators was a key message from BCG’s Climate Expert Kate Finger, who presented BCG’s Trials Review Day ... The senior researcher explained to the 170 plus farmers and advisers in attendance that a declaration of an El Niño, as happened last year, “did not always equal drought.”
Rushworth Rail Trail now heritage listed
Campaspe Shire Council and Heritage Victoria have been working on the new Rail Trail project in Rushworth. After detailed historical and site investigations, Heritage Victoria have placed the former Rushworth Railway Station on the Victorian Heritage Inventory (number H7924-0100).
Local council electoral review outcome: Buloke’s “extreme disappointment”
Buloke Shire Council has moved to write to the Minister for Local Government, The Hon. Melissa Horne, expressing its extreme disappointment in the outcome of a recent Local Council Electoral Structure Review ... In its final report handed down in February 2024, and with all recommendations accepted by the Minister, the panel recommended that Buloke Shire Council adopt a multi-councillor ward structure, with a total of 6 councillors, 3 wards and 2 councillors per ward, a reduction of 1 councillor.

Inland Rail reaches another milestone with the opening of the new Glenrowan bridge: King, Gallagher
The Inland Rail project has reached a major milestone in Victoria, with the opening of the new Beaconsfield Parade bridge in Glenrowan. The new 145-metre bridge will replace the 60-year-old existing bridge to allow greater clearance for Inland Rail to run double-stacked freight trains safely underneath.

Wedderburn wears midweek crown
Wedderburn is North Central Playing Area’s midweek pennant premiership team after defeating Wycheproof by 7 shots in an exciting and fitting end to a very successful season, played at the St. Arnaud Country Club. For much of the game, Wedderburn held a slight advantage, which stood at 11 shots shortly after the luncheon resumption, 52 ends having been completed.
Government’s failed training pledge: Mallee apprenticeship slump
Mallee tradies will be hard pressed to find apprentices to address a skills shortage due to a collapse in trade training under Labor, Member for Mallee Anne Webster says. New data from the National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER) shows the number of apprenticeships and trainees in training fell by 12.63 per cent in Mallee after the Albanese Labor Government’s first year in office.
Newstead Open Studios art trail
Newstead Open Studios art trail is a locally inspired and crafted event, held annually since 2015 and based in and around Newstead, in the heart of Victoria’s goldfields region. This, our tenth-year, features 10 studios with 17 artists participating.
Maldon’s motorbike mystery solved
Thanks go to Maldon resident Barry Murfett, who read last week’s article in the [Tarrangower] Times about a postcard (c. 1907) which pictures an early motorbike. Barry put the [Tarrangower] Times in touch with Greg Smith, the owner of an antique motorbike which is almost certainly the machine pictured on the old postcard.

New greens draw a crowd
The investment in synthetic grass greens has proved a winner for the Corryong Golf Club with more than 50 players from across the region competing in the annual tournament on Sunday - the largest field for many years. The highlights of the day were Division 1 Women’s winner, Dana Lampitt, shooting a new course record of 84 and Gordon Webb recording the second best round on the new course with a 77 in the A Grade Men section.

Member for Benambra, Bill Tilley, fears laws designed to protect livestock from wild dogs will be scrapped and promised consultation with people in the Upper Murray is nothing but lip service. Member for Northern Victoria Region, Wendy Lovell, told the Victorian Parliament last Wednesday that the Victorian government had surrendered to ill-informed propaganda from lobby groups without talking to the farmers who will be most affected.
