Hop into school art show
Hop Dac was born in Vietnam and came to Australia as a refugee in 1980 and through a series of life events he now has a connection to Birchip through his partner, a daughter of Maree Harris (Rickard). When approached to be involved in the Birchip Art Show in 2024, following some impressive publicity in “The Age” Culture, Art and Design section, Hop said, “I have heard of Birchip thanks to Maree, but also because of the vanilla slices and the Russell Street bombers.”
At Charlton, J.J.’s perfect ten
On the inaugural celebration of Maddi’s Round – a North Central Netball Association initiative, raising awareness and showing support for those currently fighting their own battle with cancer and named in memory of Maddi Fitzpatrick, Charlton’s young gun netballer, who lost her own battle earlier this year – the three codes, football, hockey and netball came together at four venues across the North Central Region united as one to ensure NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE.
Century of power generated right here in Latrobe
At midday on Sunday, June 15 1924, electricity from the new Yallourn Power Station first reached Melbourne when the State Electricity Commission switched on the high voltage transmission line linking Morwell and the Yarraville distribution terminal. Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly (Horsham) currently conducts the Whippets (AFL) program, so Rhonda Allan of the Mallee Sports Assembly (Wycheproof) contacted Wimmera Assembly to facilitate a proposed Come ’N’ Try session.

With an unusually late start due to Wycheproof-Narraport having no under-17s, the teams were bolstered by some of the girls who have been playing in the girls competition and an exciting, albeit low-scoring game ensued.
Albanese’s Basin Plan sugar hit fails to deliver: VFF
The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) says the Albanese Labor Government’s plan to take water from food production in the Murray Darling Basin Plan in exchange for a $300 million sugar hit is yet another slap in the face for regional communities. VFF Water Council Chair Andrew Leahy said the funding package announced by Water Minister Tanya Plibersek will go nowhere close to what will be required to support communities targeted for water buybacks.

New system boosts survival chances
Thousands of firefighters will be better protected on the frontline with a new foam fitout on all of CFA’s ultralight vehicles. The agency has commenced the new $3.19 million retro-fit program which includes 246 existing ultralights plus $4.95 million for the purchase of 33 new ultralights with crew protection.
