There was strong interest for an AFL session to be conducted in Donald for people of all abilities.
Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly (Horsham) currently conducts the Whippets (AFL) program, so Rhonda Allan of the Mallee Sports Assembly (Wycheproof) contacted Wimmera Assembly to facilitate a proposed Come ’N’ Try session. They were more than happy to assist, which was excellent.
Rhonda then contacted Danny Forrest of the Donald Football Club, who gladly approved the use of their oval for the session (he even offered the use of equipment if needed). Thank you, Danny, and the DFC.
The session was conducted on Wednesday, June 5, in the morning. The weather was perfect for the outdoor activity. Matt Jolly from the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly facilitated the session, with support from his work colleague Lydia Schneider.
There was also the continued great support from the staff and students of the Donald High School which always encouraged and assists the participants during the activities. Staff and participants attended from McCallum Day Services (St Arnaud), Woodbine (Warracknabeal) and other community members. Thank you to all for their attendance.
Matt commenced the session with basic ball-handling drills. This was followed by kicking and then modified games for the groups. To conclude the session participants tried their luck and skill with goal kicking and a competition of who celebrated the best after they kicked a goal. It was a fun and energetic session, and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
