The Surface Water Intake – Wet Season Flows Policy ... sets clear guidance to industry about access to wet season flows, and a pathway for responsible and sustainable economic development.  The policy is highly precautionary, reducing the volume of water otherwise available under existing policy from 20 per cent to less than 5 per cent of wet season flows in Top End rivers.

Australia Day winners celebrated at small council presentation

After the big washout of festivities on Australia Day, Barkly Regional Council rescheduled the awards ceremony for last Friday at the Council Chambers. A good number of community members turned out to support the winners of the various categories. However, several of the winners were unable to attend due to other commitments, including Citizen of the Year Alba Brockie.

Civil works on long-awaited Youth Justice Facility set to start

Youth on bail in Tennant Creek will be able to stay on Country and close to home with construction commencing on a new Youth Justice Accommodation Facility. Part of the $100.5 million Barkly Regional Deal, civil works at the Peko Road facility will begin this month.

Singleton water allocations: environmentalists fail in court

Proceedings in the Supreme Court about the controversial Singleton Station water allocation by the NT Government were all dismissed by Justice Barr on 31 January 2024. The unsuccessful plaintiffs were the Alice Springs based environmental organisation, Arid Land Environment Centre (ALEC), and the Mpwerempwer Aboriginal Corporation, representing Aboriginal people in the Singleton region 380 km north of Alice Springs.

Improved mobile phone coverage for Central Australian homelands: Uibo

Five new mobile phone hotspots are now in operation in the remote homelands of Petyale, Ankweleyelengkwe, Welere, Urrermerne and Payeperrentye. The Territory Government continues its partnership with the Centre for Appropriate Technology (CfAT) with an additional $300,000 program to deliver hotspots to residents and tourists. There are now 53 mobile phone hotspots at very remote sites throughout the Territory.

Young speedway racer competes in national junior titles tonight

Jamie Jones, a Junior Sedan driver from Tennant Creek Speedway, is currently competing in the 2024 SSA Junior Sedan National Titles in Grafton, New South Wales. The finals will be held tonight at the Grafton Speedway, where Jamie will be racing alongside 76 other juniors from across Australia.

Pilot Men’s Behaviour Change program to begin in Katherine: Worden

The new $2.41 million program will run for three years, and deliver tailored services to men to educate them about what drives their abusive behaviour, including how the use of alcohol and drugs contributes to their behaviour, with a service provider expected to be appointed by July. This program will hold men to account and keep women and children safe as the main priority.
