Musician releases song inspired by Threeways Roadhouse

Recent stories

A New South Wales musician has expressed his love for Warumungu country in a recently released song titled Threeways.

Kevin Sullivan from Gerrigong, New South Wales, wrote the track after travelling with his family band the Sulli-Vans during the COVID pandemic.

“We were living in our sponsored caravan and had left outback Queensland, entering the Northern Territory during the COVID period,” he said.

“We had travelled over 170,000 kilometres and performed more than 270 shows, and we had come to a fork in the road. We were nearly broke, busted and there was nothing for miles.

“We were feeling a little desperate and stopped to perform a show at the Threeways Roadhouse.

“It’s a place I had visited many times over the years while on tours with bands.”

Kevin said the hospitality by the owners of the roadhouse and staff really touched them and this was the motivation for the track.

Threeways is a song that evokes the driving heartbeat of the Australian outback, the arid landscape, the culture and the overall welcoming nature of its people.

“The general feel of the song calls the traveller to stop and visit an iconic roadhouse in a remote part of the world, staffed by backpackers and used as an oasis on the journey of those traversing the red centre of Australia,” he said.

Kevin says the song has a tongue-in-cheek message for prospective tourists coming to Australia when he sings,” If you’re coming to Australia and you’ve only got one week, call in to the Threeways Roadhouse, 15 miles out of Tennant Creek”.

“I can hear Threeways becoming an anthem for travellers through the outback – Tourism Australia, I hope you’re listening!”

Kevin’s new album, also titled Threeways, is due for release this year.
