Varroa reveals need for biosecurity boost: NSW Farmers
NSW Farmers says the federal government must force importers to pay for the biosecurity threats they create. The calls came after authorities admitted defeat on eradicating Varroa mite after more than a year of fighting the invasive pest.
Hometown handler tastes victory in Henty sheep dog trial
A new Henty resident made the Three Sheep Trial his own at the Henty Machinery Field Days, taking out the tough event against the cream of the nation’s best trialers. Paul Elliott and his Border Collie Elliott’s Brisket scored 188 points to win the trial from John Perry, Bredbo, and Boco Raffa on 183 points under judge Ken Robinson, Quirindi, NSW.
Northern Rivers Rail Trail launches business Connect Program
Tweed Shire Council is inviting businesses and commercial operators to share in the success of the popular Northern Rivers Rail Trail (Tweed section) and sign up to its new Connect Program ... the Connect Program is designed to connect commercial operators and businesses to the award-winning Rail Trail which opened in March.
Wentworth’s huge program has something for everyone
Wentworth Agricultural Show has a long and decorated history. The town, located in the far south west of NSW at the junction of the Murray and Darling rivers, has run its show since 1885 with a charter “to promote the breed and quality of stock”.
Council flags big rates hike
Ratepayers would face a rates increase of more than 48 per cent under a proposal put to Narrandera Shire Council at a meeting this week. During the September council meeting, it was recommended that the council make an application to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) for the implementation of a Special Variation (SV) begin in the 2024/25 financial year.
Mayor re-elected and new deputy chosen
Narrandera Shire Council has re-elected its Mayor Neville Kschenka but elected a new deputy to replace Cr Cameron Lander at its meeting on Tuesday afternoon … A ballot was conducted for the deputy mayor and resulted in a tie 4-all so the hat was brought out and Cr Sue Ruffles was declared the successful candidate.

This past weekend, the Kerang Memorial Hall hosted the annual show of the Mid-Murray Orchid Club. The event was a visual and olfactory delight with stunning colours and fragrances that could rival any high-end perfume.
Decider draws $25K at gate
Despite less teams being involved in the Riverina Football League grand final at Narrandera Sportsground on Saturday the gate was up $4000 on last year. The crowd paid $25,378 at the gate to watch Turvey Park win their first senior premiership in 21 years.
I would walk 500 miles for dementia: wrap up
When I decided I wanted to do this walk for dementia awareness in honour of Mum, I thought it would be nice if a few friends joined me for a walk along the river. Maybe we would do a little bit of walking here and there across the month of September, wear a piece of tartan for fun and at a push perhaps I could raise $500.

Important update on Varroa destructor: Melons Australia
The National Management Group (NMG), of which Melons Australia represents industry on, confirmed at its meeting on 19 September 2023 that eradication of Varroa destructor (varroa mite) is no longer feasible based on technical grounds, following advice from the Consultative Committee on Emergency Plant Pests (CCEPP). The response will now enter a transition to management phase.

The proposed redevelopment of the historic Grafton Brewery is in doubt after council posed over 100 conditions on the business including restrictive operating hours ... But Mr Firth said the development may never be realised due to the onerous and duplicitous requirements that make the development potentially unworkable.

Endangered frog species defying extinction fears: FCNSW
Ecologists are reporting a promising start to a translocation project involving the Southern stuttering frog (Mixophyes australis) ... The Southern Stuttering Frog was regarded as extinct on the south coast of New South Wales due to chytrid fungus, which attacks the skin of a frog.
