Wentworth Agricultural Show has a long and decorated history.
The town, located in the far south west of NSW at the junction of the Murray and Darling rivers, has run its show since 1885 with a charter “to promote the breed and quality of stock”.
Looking at the huge program for horses at the 2023 show it would seem the society has stuck to its ideals, with a large variety of breeds and ridden events. The program included a busy encouragement ring for inexperienced young riders.
Despite the town suffering some flooding last year, the event went on without a hitch.
In the harness section the supreme champion Hackney horse or pony was Pas de Cheval driven by Janine Kerr and the champion non-hackney was Craig Preston’s Poesie de Baileys at Noon.
The breed ring had many different horses on show, including Arabians, Welsh, Australian ponies, Palominos, Thoroughbreds, heavy horses and a large Standardbred group.
The Miniature/small horse or pony section had a large number of classes, with the supreme award going to Pam O’Laughlln’s Qtopia Designabelle. Designabelle also starred in the performance classes winning the showjumping championship and the most versatile award.
A well-filled novelties section is something now sadly missing from a lot of shows but at Wentworth there was a lot to see. Jill Tunkin’s The Sky’s The Limit featured in the senior ranks and Robert Scobie’s Sanlirra Artistry took several wins in the juniors.
In the HRCAV ring, the high point rider of the show was Belinda Curtain and CP In Fashion.
There were two full days of classes in the show horse section.
The grand slam winners were Jaimee Bruggemann’s Ballymount Laffranchi in the hack section, Teaghan Lewis’ Hamelot Park Minuet in the galloway section and by Kim and Gracie Humphries’ Karlana Spring Chatter in the pony section. Jaimee also won the Jo-Anne Orchard memorial trophy for supreme rider of the show.
The supreme led exhibit of the show was Bobby Hammet’s Royalwood Strolling Minstrel, supreme show hack was Grace Norley’s Zambrotta (Jack) and the supreme show hunter was Paige Natale’s Karlana Spring Chatter.
Over three days of showjumping, Nicole Bruggemann was first and second in the open show jumping championships with Nikandro MPH and Tulara Cascadel, Charli Hill’s Royal Coment won the under 21 championship and the high point local champion showjumper was Sam Freeman’s Freeloader.
