Murray Darling Basin Authority visit

An influx of Government and Government Agency staff visited Wilcannia on Monday 29th July to look at the old weir, proposed site for the new weir and meet with local organisations and the Shire. Included in the group was former Western Lands Commissioner and passionate Wilcannia and Darling River advocate Geoff Wise.

Elected councillors to return but”¦

Eighteen community members, from towns and rural areas, attended the community meeting with the Minister for Local Government Hon. Ron Hoenig on Sunday 21st July to hear of his plans for the future of Central Darling Shire Council. The Minister said that he would be returning the Council to a form of democracy in around March 2025.

Elders story brought to life

The story told by the late Elsie Jones on how the Baaka people got fire is the topic for the movie, made by students at the Central School last week. Under the guidance of Simon and Amilie Storey, the students first told the story they had heard over the years.

Line dancers from all over liven up Narrandera for annual festival

Line dancers from all over the country descended upon Narrandera recently, turning the town into a lively festival of twirls and stomps. Locals jumped in, mingling with the competitors, creating cherished memories and savouring the electric atmosphere.

Community comes together for reflection

An event that provides an opportunity to acknowledge those whose lives have been lost in our community will be held in Corryong next week. The third annual ‘Corryong Spirit’ event will shine a light into the darkness of grief and the guest speakers include former AFL footballer Justin Koschitzke and Rev Tim Costello, one of Australia’s most respected community leaders.

Deer harvest numbers increase  

The Game Management Authority (GMA) recently released the Estimates of the 2023 deer harvest in Victoria report. Results show an estimated 137,090 deer were harvested in 2023 which is an 11 per cent increase on the estimated 123,400 deer harvested in 2022 and a 59 per cent increase on the long-term average of 86,400.

 Finals fever arrives

Corryong departed the finals race at the hands of Tumbarumba in the 1st semi final on Saturday.The Roos were ruthless from the first bounce kicking six goals but to the Demons’ credit they showed spirit in the second quarter to match it with their more fancied opponents.

At a Community Meeting in Carisbrook ... the findings and recommendations of the Carisbrook Levee Independent Review were shared with residents ... The report has found that overall, there is confidence in the catchment modelling to which the Levee has been built.

Griffith region tops corn production

The Griffith region was the major corn (maize) producer in Australia in 2022-2023, according to data recently released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The region supplied 80,000 tonne of corn.
