Susan Close keeps blue-green algae sludge secret despite health warning for River Murray: Centofanti, Whetstone
Blue-green algae sludge – which poses health risks to humans and livestock – has begun trickling down the River Murray from New South Wales after Susan Close agreed to accept the concerning bacteria in South Australia without warning communities ... the NSW Government recognising “not only is the foul smell and colour of the water extremely distressing for the local community, blue-green algae can also pose potential health risks to humans and livestock”.
Edithburgh’s exciting new development
Willliam McShane. Edithburgh’s new $1.8 million sports and community centre was unveiled on Sunday, June 2. The project, funded by the Australian Government, was one of four initiatives on Yorke Peninsula to help the region’s recovery after the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires at Edithburgh, Yorketown, Price and Port Vincent.

Joanna Tucker. Suicide awareness organisation SOS Yorkes is on the brink of collapse unless more volunteers can be found immediately ... Chair Ann Clothier said, if SOS Yorkes — which was founded in 2015 and stands for Stamp Out Suicide — cannot find a new secretary and treasurer in the next few weeks, the service will cease at the end of this month.

New learning centre for Naracoorte
If all goes according to plan, Naracoorte will have a new early learning and childcare centre by mid-to-late 2025. Work on the $2million facility located at the unused former TAFE building is set to commence this September.

Farm rates pain
Rachel Hagan. Primary producers and other residents have packed the Yorke Peninsula Council gallery to witness an impassioned debate about whether farmers should be asked to pay an increased rate across the next financial year. The special council meeting, held at Minlaton on Wednesday, May 22, became heated at times as councillors argued about whether to charge farmers higher rates than they currently pay to help cover the costs of services such as road maintenance.
To inform decision-making for Southern growers – New farming systems project
A new farming systems project is set to shed light on how farm management decisions affect profitability and sustainability to help southern region grain growers understand the upside and downside of their decisions. The five-year project involves nine field sites … covering different soil types and rainfall zones in South Australia and Victoria, as well as biophysical modelling and economic evaluation.

Investment in education
A South Australian education union has slammed the 2024 Federal Budget for failing to deliver the much-needed investment in education. SA Branch of the Australian Education Union says public schools, including the ones in areas like Naracoorte Lucindale District, are not currently funded to the minimum school resourcing standard. “The current resourcing agreement for South Australia is set to expire at the end of this year…”: branch president Jennie-Marie Gorman.
The dry continues
The furrowed brows of farmers continue to search the sky rain, but the season is on track for the driest May on record. Since last August most of the region’s farming land has experienced less than 10 per cent of normal rainfall since 1900, and less than five per cent in some areas.
Rates down for some
At least 749 properties will receive a decrease in council rates under a proposal by Naracoorte Lucindale Council’s administration. The decrease is included in a breakdown of the average 5.8 percent rate hike included in council’s draft 2024-25 Business Plan and Budget. There are 6578 rateable properties in the council area, and Cr Monique Crossling claimed during council’s May 1 meeting an average 5.8 percent increase was an extra $17.73 over a year.
