$160k for local radio
Gabrielle Duykers. Community radio station 5TCBFM has received a sizable cash injection to update its studio equipment and ensure broadcast continues. At its April meeting, Tatiara District Council voted to grant the station $80,000 to replace broadcast and studio equipment, and approved an additional $80,000 loan to help facilitate further infrastructure upgrades.
Edenhope minerals explored
Gabrielle Duykers. A junior exploration company is expanding its search for valuable mineral deposits on either side of the SA-Victorian border. Resource Base has applied for 12 mineral exploration licences to search for rare earth elements near Naracoorte, Penola, Edenhope, and Goroke.
Councils urged to seek expert help
Chris Oldfield. When it comes to roads, 'a stitch in time saves nine’ and it is a lot cheaper for councils to look after them, says one of Australia’s leading road research experts, Tyrone Toole. Only in very poor countries has Mr Toole seen bitumen roads ripped up and replaced with gravel ones ... for councils to do such things in Australia, Mr Toole said it would be a sign of “desperation” and “a backwards measure”.
Report points to region’s glaring gaps
Gabrielle Duykers. Access to housing, education, mobile service, and high-quality freight infrastructure are the most significant development issues facing the region, according to a recent report. The 2022 Regional Strengths and Infrastructure Gaps report – developed in partnership with Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast (RDALC) and Infrastructure Australia – was assembled to highlight opportunities for supporting the regionalisation trend that occurred as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Labor pains
Countless reports, ‘engagement’, reviews and the rapid erosion of the river have highlighted all these failings, yet a potential prime minister appears oblivious to the geographical diversity of issues, constraints and environments across the basin. With city centric politics appearing more interested in getting elected, what hope does the health of our basin have?
Build policy on solutions, not winning votes: Speak Up
The community-based Speak Up Campaign has joined the growing list of organisations expressing concern at last week’s Labor Party announcement around implementation of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. In particular is the issue of water buybacks, which Labor’s Shadow Water Minister Terri Butler conceded, “If we have to” was “an option that will have to be pursued.”
Water fight risks real damage: NSW Farmers
"There are real opportunities to deliver environmental outcomes to the river system without reducing production. I would call on both sides to put aside the political point scoring around who's tougher on water, and instead build upon the opportunities in the basin plan that have been hard fought but are still yet incomplete": Richard Bootle, NSW Farmers Water Taskforce Chair.
SA riders set for National Para-dressage competition
As part of a partnership with Equine Pathways Australia, Racing SA is supporting three South Australian riders competing at the Australian National Para-dressage competition at Boneo Park in Victoria ... the event is a qualifier for the World Equestrian Games to be held in Denmark later in 2022.
Jobs to go under Albanese’s water plan: VFF
The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) has warned that jobs across regional Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia will be lost if Anthony Albanese’s policy for water recovery is implemented under the Murray Darling Basin Plan. VFF President Emma Germano said Federal Labor’s five-point policy showed a total misunderstanding of the Basin Plan and a total disregard for jobs in regional communities.
Labor’s plan to future-proof Australia’s water resources: Albanese
An Albanese Labor Government will protect Australia’s precious water resources with a five-point plan for the Murray Darling Basin that strikes the right balance between the needs of local communities, farmers and the environment ... Labor will deliver on the final 450 gigalitres (GL) of water for the environment that Scott Morrison and Barnaby Joyce have failed to deliver.
Forecast of low prices, more certainty for southern Basin irrigators
Water allocation prices in the southern Murray–Darling Basin are likely to remain low for a third consecutive year, according to the latest ABARES Water Market Outlook.
Elections. One down and two to go this year
Mulga Bill. We call our system ‘representative government’ which obviously means we elect Members to go forth and promote the wishes of the electorate, in the Parliament. It is a fair call that an Independent MP will accurately represent his electorate but on many occasions this fine principle is subverted for the party politician. An elected MP from a party will need to firstly raise the concern of his electorate within the Party Room ... Do you question whether we have genuine representative government?
Stubble smoke taint fears for red grapes
Chris Oldfield. As the stubble burning season fires up, the region’s grape growers hope their red grape harvest is not affected by smoke taint. Each year, traditional grain growers burn their stubbles before working their soil for next year’s crop in a bid to control weeds, pests and fungal spores. Meanwhile, a cooler grape growing season means a harvest that could clash with stubble burning.
Lack of child care at Kingston hits federal parliament
Chris Oldfield. The lack of child care for around 50 families on a waiting list at Kingston has been raised in the Australian Federal Parliament. “Those in this chamber have heard me speak about Kingston South East and a lack of childcare services before,” Member for Barker Tony Pasin told parliament ... “A farming region devastated by fire, and parents unable to earn off-farm income because there was no childcare service available."
Plans to establish a local university hub gain support
Plans for a Regional University Centre in Port Lincoln are gaining momentum, with the City of Port Lincoln supporting a proposal for a local university hub. Offering a range of tertiary education options, a university hub would fill a gap in the local and regional education market, providing options for residents to study locally.
Masters games are set and ready to go
Chris Oldfield. The 2022 Tatiara SA Masters Games are set and ready to go in “The Good Country” – featuring 24 mature age sports, social gatherings and a lot of fun. With sport being the heartbeat of rural communities, the event over four days (April 7-11) is expected to attract more than a thousand athletes, spectators and volunteers combined.
Hood takes Adelaide
Gabrielle Duykers. Naracoorte-born leader Lucy Hood has won the seat of Adelaide, ousting Liberal frontbencher Rachel Sanderson ... After a two-year campaign she emerged victorious, along with her party, SA Labor ... Ms Hood said she considered her rural upbringing a strength, and wanted to bring “country values” to her electorate.
Transmutation wins national award
Sheryl Lowe. Successful Robe business, Transmutation, is owned and operated by Brad and Narelle Scott and has just received national recognition by being announced winners in the Australian Small Business Championship Awards (2021) ... Naming the business Transmutation, is a clever play on words for the award-winning business which is based, like the meaning of the word, on changing the form of plastic bread tags into sought-after retail items.
