Naracoorte leaders are hoping a newly completed trail linking the township to the Caves National Park will boost tourism in the district.

On May 5, representatives from the Naracoorte Caves and local government members gathered to officially open the Naracoorte Caves Trail.

Naracoorte Lucindale Council Mayor, Erika Vickery said the trail was a valuable asset to the region.

“The Naracoorte Caves Trail connects the town of Naracoorte with the world-renowned caves and allows locals and visitors alike to travel across the landscape and understand how it has changed over time,” Ms Vickery said.

The 14.7-kilometre-long walking and biking trail begins at Naracoorte’s Memorial Parklands and winds its way to the UNESCO world heritage Naracoorte Caves site.

Ms Vickery said council hoped the attraction would encourage visitors to stay longer in the region and boost the local economy.

The Naracoorte Caves Trail project was made possible by a $128,000 contribution from Naracoorte Lucindale Council and $100,000 from the Federal Government through its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

A number of local volunteers also formed the Caves Trails Working Group which advised and assisted council in the planning phase of the project.

Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the Trail would be enjoyed by those living in the district as well as visitors to the region.

“This project builds on the high-quality visitor experiences offered at Naracoorte Caves to provide a linkage to Naracoorte township and will be used by regular bike riders, walkers and families seeking opportunities for family activities.” Mr Pasin said.

Consisting of both sealed and unsealed roads, the Trail weaves its way through farmland, vineyards, and seven cave sites. A series of information panels are also dotted along the path to guide bike riders and walkers through the history and geology of the area.
