Petition against rates hike

A petition has been launched opposing the Narrandera Shire Council’s proposed Special Rates Variation (SRV). More than 100 residents attended a meeting at the Narrandera Ex-servicemen’s Club for what was described by organisers as a ‘very successful, constructive and productive meeting’.

Hatty scoops the pool in annual crop competition

RA and SJ Hatty’s crop of Boree wheat has won the Ganmain Show Society’s annual Royal Agricultural Show wheat crop competition. The crop of Boree wheat sown on May 9 has a yield estimate of 5.0 t/ha.

A free  Bushfire Resilience Rating app  has been released for residents to assess and prepare their homes for bushfire risk. Households can measure the bushfire resilience of their own home through a star-rating system and then get a customised action plan to make practical, safety improvements to their homes.

Billions in savings one step closer: NSW Farmers

NSW Farmers is thanking the NSW Government for amendments to the Biosecurity Act that will save the agriculture sector an estimated $2 billion annually through better pest and weed management. On Thursday NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty introduced amendments to the Biosecurity Act 2015, which would establish the state’s first independent Biosecurity Commissioner, an important step towards improved land management.

Asia-Pacific forestry leaders tour the Watagans: Forestry Corporation of NSW

Delegates from the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission have taken part in a field trip hosted by Forestry Corporation looking at sustainable, multi-use forest management in the Watagan Mountains of the Central Coast. The commission is represented by international delegates, who report to the United Nations on forestry matters in the Asia-Pacific region.

Wade drills life skills

Australian Soccer legend, Paul Wade, has been in Koondrook Barham this week delivering a life skills program to kids at the towns’ schools. Paul competed for Australia in the 1988 Olympic Games, captained the Socceroos from 1990-1996, representing the country in 118 international games including two World Cup campaigns and also had great success back home with two National Soccer League Championships and 1988 National Soccer League player of the year.  

Captured in time

There was anticipation in the air as two time capsules from 25 years ago were unearthed last week ... School captains, Meiha Burns and Daisy McGlone, led the formalities, with vice captains, Lainie Hawken and Hayley Rooney, principal Fiona Miller and principal of 1998, Glenn Hall, giving an insight into school life past and present.

Baptism by fire

The Koondrook Recreation Reserve hosted the inaugural Swan Hill District Cricket Association (SHDCA) match between Nyah District and Koondrook Barham ... Koondrook Barham's bowling was lethal and after 34 overs, Nyah District was all out for 107 ... Koondrook Barham's Jade Stewart claimed four wickets in his five overs with one maiden.

Count draws koala spotters

Over a hundred people gathered at the Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve recently to attend the annual Koala Count event ... "These magnificent creatures have since spread far and wide, and the community are determined to uncover the full extent of their reach. It is reported that 25 koalas were counted this year, with five of them accompanied by their adorable little joeys, bringing the total tally to 30."
