Leeton Council says no to Murray-Darling Water Amendment Bill 2023

Leeton Shire Mayor Tony Reneker said the Federal Government’s Bill to rewrite the 2012 Murray-Darling Basin Plan endangers the future of businesses and communities in the Murrumbidgee Valley ... Leeton Shire Council, along with Murray Darling Association Region 9 members and key commodity groups in the MIA (such as citrus and rice), urge Murray Darling Association (MDA) members to oppose expanded buybacks and removal of socio-economic protections.

Use of leading breast surgery technology expanded across Murrumbidgee

Women across Murrumbidgee who require breast cancer surgery are to benefit from the expansion of the Magseed technology to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. Magseed, a small metal device about the size of a grain of rice, is implanted in a cancerous breast tumour to mark its location for surgery which allows for more flexibility for surgeons when making an incision.

Regional health advisory panel established

An important step to rebuilding essential health services across regional and rural NSW has been taken by the state government with the establishment of a Regional Health Ministerial Advisory Panel, but there are no local representatives advocating for the Northern Rivers region ... panel is to focus on building the regional health workforce, strengthening community engagement, and improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Nippers back on beaches

Clarence Valley beaches now feature a splash of pink after the Far North Coast Surf Lifesaving Nippers season began and children don their pink rash shirts. Nippers at Yamba is open to children between the ages of six and fourteen, and the surf skills program teaches lifesaving techniques, surf safety, CPR, and rescue experience, while completing fun activities in the surf.

Raffle ticket was the unexpected start to a new calling

John Holmes died at the fire front after serving the RFS for 50 years

The smell of smoke from the Bean Creek fire sat heavy in the morning air at Mallanganee as the local RFS unit mourned the loss of one of its members. The  NSW Rural Fire Service  said the RFS “suffered a great loss with the tragic passing of senior deputy captain John Holmes”. John was battling the Bean Creek Fire, about 15km north of Bonalbo, when he had a heart attack...

It has since washed into our freshwater waterways where it slows the movement of water, impedes the growth of native water plants, and reduces the food supply for aquatic life.

NSW introduces landmark Climate Change Bill to set emissions reduction targets: Minns, Sharpe

The Minns Labor Government has introduced its landmark Climate Change Bill, to enshrine emissions reduction targets in law in NSW and establish an independent Net Zero Commission. The Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Bill 2023 commits NSW to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 per cent by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050.

Horseless racing well attended

The Gunbower Racing Club’s annual race day was held on Saturday, but in yet another blow to the club, the 45ml of rain received ... saw all horse racing cancelled ...the club went ahead with all planned off-track events and was blown away by the support of the almost 2,000 people who still attended ... “Our track was in beautiful condition, and that’s what made it so hard."
