Everyone loves a success story, especially if it’s someone they’ve known or with whom they’ve brushed elbows - the Lower Clarence’s Ry X, who is on the cover of the June 17 French Rolling Stone magazine, is one of those success stories and, potentially, he might soon become a global name on the lips of music lovers, as well as makers and shakers clamouring for a piece of the action.

Yaegl People celebrate a step towards self-determination

The NSW State Environmental Planning Policy (Aboriginal Land) 2019 aims “to provide for development delivery plans for areas of land owned by local Aboriginal land councils [LALC]” and “to declare specified development carried out on land owned by LALCs to be regionally significant development” - last Saturday June 25 the Yaegl Traditional Owners Corporation (YTOC) held a gathering at Hickey Island to recognise and promote another step towards self determination.

New drone technology revolutionises regional bridge and road maintenance

Aboriginal koala conservation

I reckon the Monty Python team would have been jealous of the creative genius behind NSW’s Koala Strategy. It would be hilarious except for the $200 million price tag to save an irruptive species which is in much greater numbers across a much wider area than before the European ‘invasion’. Apart from Strzelecki, no explorer saw any koalas because they didn’t live in the grassy valleys occupied by Aborigines and sought by pastoralists.

NSW Government invests in aboriginal koala conservation: Griffin

A $600,000 investment to support an Aboriginal koala habitat conservation project is being delivered as one of the first actions in the NSW Koala Strategy. Minister for Environment James Griffin said the project with the Gumbaynggirr community applies cultural lessons from traditional owners. “The traditional custodians of this land intrinsically understand how to care for their Country,” Mr Griffin said ... Statewide emergency order issued for varroa mite in NSW

A statewide emergency order has been issued to control the movement of bees across NSW and stop the spread of varroa mite ... “After the first detection of varroa mite at the Port of Newcastle on Friday, DPI is investigating potentially contaminated hives outside the initial 50 kilometre biosecurity zone,” Minister Saunders said.

Cross Border commissioner role questioned

Gabrielle Duykers. As the appointment of a cross-border commissioner edges closer, community advocates are hoping the new officer will be accessible and provide a voice for locals. Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven has introduced the Cross-Border Commissioner Bill – a key election promise from the SA Labor Party – setting the foundation for appointing someone to the position.

Inaugural ferret race declared a winner

A most unusual “sporting” event was held at the Coleambally Football/Netball Club recently when the club hosted a successful inaugural ferret race meeting. Seymour man Martin White from Whitey’s Ferret Racing Club provided the competing animals.

Farmers take back control with a digital first

Farmer-owned environmental goods and services broker Regen Farmers Mutual is set to launch their digital platform this week, as the first of 400 farmers on a growing waitlist take up the service. RFM’s farmer members will have access to a customised ‘digital twin’ of their farms which can be used to assess their green credentials and the environmental value of their property.

Male youths lose their support crew

Funding has ended for two male youth worker positions in Evans Head. The positions were funded by the Federal Government’s Safer Communities program ... “Unfortunately, we have had to say goodbye to Josh, Toby and the Mobile Youth Van service, this decision was not ours, the program was sadly no longer funded.”

NSW councils increase rates

IPART has approved applications by eighty six NSW councils to increase their rates above the level of the annual rate peg. The modest increases were approved following an additional special variation process ... This year the rate peg was set at a minimum of 0.7%, with some further increases allowed in councils with growing populations.

Integrity Mate flashes home to win Thunderbolt

Emma Pritchard. A half head was all that separated two champion greyhounds in the world’s richest race over a short course distance, as a photo finish revealed Integrity Mate had defeated a gallant Orson Laurie right on the line to become the inaugural winner of the Thunderbolt.

Making his Mark on the country music scene

The local man lovingly referred to as “Swainy”, recently won the John P Toomey Song Writing Award at the Dusty Boots Music Festival in Narromine for Guitar Pick’n Man, an original song which tells the true story of his marriage break down, love of beer, especially Tooheys, and his passion for country music.
