Casterton’s $35k kelpie

Gabrielle Duykers. An Edenhope trained kelpie fetched more than $35,000 at a recent auction for his superb herding abilities, smashing the world record for the purchase of a working dog. The two-year-old dog named Hoover was sold to a Victorian sheep and cattle grazier at the Casterton Kelpie Association’s 25th Annual Working Dog auction on June 13.

Sheep workshops on the mark

Last Wednesday a group of 40 local sheep producers attended a Lamb Marking Best Practice workshop organised by Western Murray Land Improvement Group (WMLIG) and Central Murray Sheep Producer at “Glenbar” in Mallan. The workshop was facilitated by Geoff Duddy from Sheep Solutions who has dedicated the last 30 years to improving sheep producers’ and enterprises’ skills and knowledge base across all areas of sheep production. Whilst recent wet weather has not been ideal for marking, the dry day offered up the opportunity for farmers to learn and recognise best practice.

Two more Docker seasons for Josh

Kirstin Nicholson. Cohuna’s Josh Treacy has been signed on to the Fremantle Dockers for another two seasons. Josh played his first AFL game for the Dockers in round four of the 2021 season in April against the Hawks and now has seven games under his belt, citing the win against Sydney as the best game he has ever played in and been a part of.

Territory iron shipment leaves Darwin port

The first shipment of iron ore from processed waste materials at Frances Creek Mine are being celebrated this week as a huge sign of strength and confidence in the Territory’s mineral industry. The Territory Labor Government approved the Mining Management Plan for the Frances Creek Mine in March 2020 enabling the processing of existing ore stockpiles at the mine. NT Bullion – the operator of the mine – has been using innovative x-ray technology from German based Steinert to screen waste rock stockpiles at the site to produce export quality iron ore.

Avocados hit the high seas

For the first time ever, Costa, Australia’s leading fresh produce grower, have sent a shipment of their premium Lovocados to Singapore by sea freight. The order of 3200 trays left Brisbane in May and arrived in Singapore in June, and there have since been twelve more containers shipped to locations across Asia including Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.

Church group’s soul purpose is making new connections

“If we lose churches, we lose the soul of our community,” says Stuart Holm. Stuart is not a member of the St John’s Uniting Church in Adams St in Coraki but he cares about its closure and what it means for the community. He is one of eight people in a working group discussing the re-invention of the church. “The conversation started three weeks ago and it’s building momentum,” Stuart said.

Diggers biker group beds down with RSM support

Out of town on the Ellangowan flats, the Diggers Clubhouse is a place where serving and former veterans can meet like-minded people. The former RFS building is the clubhouse for the Diggers Military Motorcycle Club where the men-only chapter of eight meet twice a month. Club president Todd De Bono said it was a place of “no judgment”.

Clinic injects further community COVID-19 vaccination capacity

Emma Pritchard. The opening of a new Covid-19 vaccination clinic in Grafton last week has given the Clarence Valley community a massive boost in the fight against the ongoing pandemic ... NNSWLHD Director of Corporate Services and Covid-19 Vaccination Executive Matt Long said the new clinic can currently vaccinate up to 100 people per day, with that number set to increase to 200 in the coming weeks as more staff receive their vaccinations.

CVC considers ‘solar farm’ to meet its renewable energy target

Clarence Valley Council (CVC) is a step closer towards meeting its 2030 greenhouse gas emissions and renewable energy targets ... the '100% Renewables' report was re-engaged “to undertake a preliminary investigation into a mid-scale solar farm on a site located at the Grafton Regional Landfill & Resource Recovery Facility,” the report to the June 22 CVC meeting stated.

Racing towards the July racing carnival

Clarence River Jockey Club (CRJC) Executive Officer Michael Beattie declared the excitement of the 2021 July Racing Carnival was already in the air when the club held its final race meeting ahead of the popular annual event earlier this month. On June 12, more than 430 racegoers took advantage of the warm winter sunshine and headed trackside for the Ulmarra Chip-In Cup Race Day, with several young families enjoying a day out together.

Dairy riding the wave of high commodity prices

At the half-way point of 2021, Australian agriculture appears set for another strong year with the NAB Rural Commodities Index up 2.5% month-on-month in May to now be 6.2% above the same time in 2020. NAB’s June Rural Commodities Wrap, released today, reports that dairy farmers are among the producers enjoying the flow-on effects of good prices and strong seasonal conditions across many parts of the country.

No plan for Weipa: Rio Tinto dragging its heels on normalisation

Weipa's future continues to be in limbo as Rio Tinto refuses to make a commitment to hand over the keys to the town ... Rio Tinto says it is open to the idea of normalisation, but refuses to make any kind of commitment ... Deputy Premier Steven Miles is also the state’s Local Government Minister and hasn’t even visited Weipa to discuss the issue ... Member for Cook Cythia Lui has also remained silent, despite hearing the concerns from the community during her last visit.

New commissioner: C’Zarke Maza appointed to government role

Torres Strait lawyer C’Zarke Maza has been appointed as the state’s inaugural commissioner for Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa. “The Torres Strait culture to this day continues to be alive and strong and I am committed to fulfilling the task towards the legal recognition of our traditional child rearing practice,” Mr Maza said.

Exhibition launches with a bang

The highly anticipated 150ZK Truth Telling: Coming of the Light 150 Years (150ZK) exhibition was officially opened with great fanfare at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday night. Commemorating 150 years since Coming of the Light, the exhibition is the result of a successful collaborative curatorial project with Torres Strait Artists, Badu Arts, Erub Arts and Moa Arts. It investigates the impact of the London Missionary Society and Christianity on Torres Strait Islanders and the region’s way of life.
