Greater Shepparton City Council, Media Release, 2 August 2021

The biennial Bruce Wilson Memorial Heritage Lecture is returning to the region this month, with Greater Shepparton City Council encouraging residents interested in heritage to attend.

The lecture ‘Navigating heritage: past, present and future’, presented by expert Chris Johnston, will delve back to the 1970’s and forward into the future to explore changing ideas about heritage buildings and places.

Ms Johnston will host two lectures on Wednesday 18 August 2021 at the Senior Citizens’ Centre in Shepparton for those wishing to attend.

During the lecture Ms Johnston will examine what our heritage scorecard looks like today and what new directions might shape heritage into the future. She will also address the prevalence of heritage places and how they offer us ways to connect to the past, along with landscapes and heritage customs, traditions and practices.

Ms Johnston has been one of the nations’ leading heritage figures for decades, at the forefront of heritage discussion and practice. She founded Context, Victoria’s foremost heritage consultancy, in 1988 and is now an independent heritage specialist. Her heritage work has been wide-ranging, covering areas from Melbourne, Bendigo and Mildura to Canberra and the Great Barrier Reef.

Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe encouraged anyone with an interest in our nation’s heritage and its future identity to attend.

“Chris Johnston has had an extremely productive and influential career and has been a leading figure in heritage discussion around Australia,” she said.

“Council are extremely pleased to be hosting her in Greater Shepparton as part of our biennial lecture series. The event will be one for all heritage and history enthusiasts and those with an interest in heritage buildings and places.”

The 2021 lecture marks the third in Council’s biennial Heritage Lecture series, named in honour of Bruce Wilson, former Mayor, long-time Councillor, history and heritage enthusiast, and inaugural Chair of Council’s Heritage Advisory Committee (the organising body for this lecture). The lectures usually alternate with the very successful biennial Cultural Heritage Awards, another of Council’s heritage initiatives, although due to COVID-19 the 2020 awards were postponed until May 2021.
