Transfer of Wheatbelt early learning site to boost local workforce: Carey
The Cook Government has approved a 1,012 square-metre land transfer to support a growing early childhood learning centre located on McNeill Street, Dalwallinu. The site will be transferred to the Shire of Dalwallinu with conditional freehold, in recognition of the immediate and long-term benefits for the Dalwallinu community.
Kaniva Presbyterian Church restored
Kaniva Presbyterian Church was blessed to have a visit from Mobile Ministry Maintenance group. This group is made up of retired Christians with many qualifications to do volunteer renovations on Church properties, campsites etc.
Remote building blitz continues across Central Australia: Uibo, Paech
A recently awarded remote housing contract supplements a pipeline of works across Central Australia worth $256 million. The building blitz is rolling out across 33 communities and town camps in Alice Springs. The most recent contract for $30 million was awarded to Pedersen NT to build more than 20 new homes across Luritja Pintubi country.

A free Bushfire Resilience Rating app has been released for residents to assess and prepare their homes for bushfire risk. Households can measure the bushfire resilience of their own home through a star-rating system and then get a customised action plan to make practical, safety improvements to their homes.
Yanchep shedders appeal for a new home
Yanchep Community Men’s Shed is appealing to the City of Wanneroo to help find them a new home before their lease in Bracknell St runs out in February. Yanchep News Online understands Yanchep Community Men’s Shed (YCMS) also wants to contact Yanchep Beach Joint Venture (YBJV) chief executive officer Gin Wah Ang in their efforts to find some land for which they can pay a peppercorn rent or the use of an existing building for low rent.
Many issues behind empty shops
The condition of buildings, rental levels and the challenging economic environment are some of the causes of empty shops along Smith St, according to CEO Trevor Smart. Mr Smart said while some may suggest shop vacancies were caused by parking, “there are also many other issues" ... Extra rates to be spent on roads
Patrick Goldsmith. Yorke Peninsula Council will spend the $405,114 in extra rates revenue garnered from primary producers, on road-related efficiency improvement. YPC rates increased by eight per cent this year, with an extra three per cent hit taken by primary producers.
BWC to push for heritage listing
Port Broughton’s ornately decorated hotel and its stately Norfolk Island pines, the Alford Institute Hall, churches at Bute and a farmhouse at Mundoora are among 46 sites which could be heritage listed by Barunga West Council ... Council has proposed new planning rules to protect the area’s local heritage, which would make it the first council to utilise South Australia’s code amendment process for this purpose.
Remote housing milestone – one hundred homes in one hundred days: Fyles, Uibo
One hundred homes have been built in one hundred days as the Territory Labor Government’s remote housing program reaches a new milestone of 1200 new builds ... Several major construction contracts have powered a building blitz with a pipeline of works rolling out across dozens of remote communities throughout the Territory, such as a $26.5 million tender recently released in Gunbalanya to build 24 new homes and upgrade another 18, $5.2 million for 11 homes in Beswick, and $6.8 million for more homes in Maningrida.

Legislation introduced to expand national park under Plan for Our Parks: Carey, Whitby
The Cook Labor Government has introduced the Reserves Bill 2023 to the WA Parliament to enable 145,000 hectares of land to be added to the Helena and Aurora Ranges National Park. The protection of the Helena and Aurora Ranges is a strategic priority under the Cook Government's Plan for Our Parks initiative which aims to add five million hectares to the State's conservation estate.
Regions need to feed into the grid – communities must be consulted
The failure to properly consult with regional communities affected by large-scale renewable energy projects and transmission infrastructure risks delaying or de- railing the transition to a decarbonised energy grid, according to Federal Member for Indi, Helen Haines. In a submission to the Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner’s Community Engagement Review, Dr Haines has called for regional communities to be meaningfully involved in the planning of renewable energy projects and receive structural benefit and regional development from these projects.
Tyrrell says private members bill will protect prime agricultural land in Northern Victoria Region
Member for Northern Victoria Region Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell has introduced her first bill of the parliamentary year, aimed at protecting Victoria’s prime agricultural land from large-scale solar farm development. Mrs Tyrrell introduced The Planning and Environment Amendment (Soil Protection) (Solar Power Generation Facilities) Bill 2023 in State Parliament last week to protect precious agricultural land and water catchment areas from large scale solar farms.
BWC seeks to recoup costs
Michelle Daw. Barunga West Council is looking to recoup up to $305,000 a year in expenses and lost income associated with council land and buildings ... The audit covered council land use and unmade road reserves for cropping, grant payments and public liability as well as personal accident insurance premiums for progress associations and groups. Payment of water and power bills and building insurance for buildings not owned or used by council, council mowing the ovals at the Bute and Port Broughton sports clubs, and council’s community grants program were also audited.
Crime wave
In the shadow of darkness, sometimes thieves are lurking down side streets, back roads and farm paddocks, checking for unlocked cars, sheds, houses and gates to steal whatever they can. “It is a sign of the times, driven by the high cost of living as a result of high electricity prices,” according to RM Electronics owner Rob Mutton who is currently selling a record number of security cameras, helping police catch thieves.

Land sale puts history in jeopardy
Will Hunter. It is feared a historic crane located on an allotment listed for sale as part of a Department for Infrastructure and Transport land disposal in Port Wakefield may be at risk. The allotments … were listed for sale with Ray White Yorke Peninsula after Wakefield Regional Council advised DIT it had no interest in acquiring any of the land identified for disposal.
