Great heat over great wall
Patrick Goldsmith. Opposition to a proposed seawall at Coobowie is growing louder, with more than 60 people gathering at a town hall meeting on Sunday, October 1. The event was organised by the newly formed Friends of Coobowie Foreshore and attendees heard from ecologist and marine biologist John Douglas and aired their own grievances with the Yorke Peninsula Council proposal.
DA deferred to consult Yaegl people
A DA for a 36-lot subdivision at Orion Drive, Yamba, over an area that is predominantly water, has been deferred for one month by Clarence Valley Council to allow consultation with the Yaegl Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation ... this was the second time the DA had been on public exhibition ... the initial DA was lodged in September 2020.
Ask for 1000 homes
Naracoorte-Lucindale mayor Patrick Ross is ready to engage with the Country Cabinet when it holds its seventh meeting in Naracoorte next month. And Mr Ross says at the top of his list of things to be discussed with the Premier and his ministers will be the “region’s desperate need for an extra 1,000 homes”.
Vacant motor inn to help young people at risk of homelessness: Scanlon
The Palaszczuk Government is refurbishing a vacant motor inn to help young people at risk of homelessness. Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon announced the motel will be transformed into temporary supported accommodation to provide an additional 19 semi-self-contained rooms for young people aged between 16 to 24 years.
New planning program to support regional housing: Champion
A new program designed to tackle regional skills shortages in the housing and planning sectors is being established through a State and Local government partnership ... the Grow Your Own program is a joint initiative between the Malinauskas Government and Local Government Association – focused on training local talent and providing pathways to grow regional councils’ planning workforce.
Cheap power push watered down
Touted as the biggest thing since irrigation by Gannawarra Shire Council mayor, Charlie Gillingham, the VNI West project is set to stamp its 70-metre-high 500KV power lines across the landscape and skyline. One of the project’s biggest advocates has been Gannawarra Shire Council (GSC) itself with a transmission company spokesperson confirming the only reason the project is “this far west” has been the Council’s push for a terminal station to sprout an explosion in wind and solar farm.
Construction complete on new public homes in Caboolture: Scanlon
The first tenants will soon move into new social housing homes in Caboolture, with construction recently completed on 10 units. Previously the site of two homes, construction crews have built ten, one- and two-bedroom homes for singles, couples and families.

West Wimmera Shire Council is calling on individuals, investors and businesses to help address housing shortages in the region. Council has been working in close collaboration with Wimmera Southern Mallee Development for several years to explore ways to attract investment in the shire’s housing sector.
Housing and water security investment marks new era for Milingimbi: Uibo, Moss
Residents in the remote community of Milingimbi in East Arnhem can look forward to improved wellbeing and reduced overcrowding ... A $16 million tender has been awarded to WTD Constructions over 3 years to build 32 new homes and extend a further 32 existing homes for the around 1,200 people living in Milingimbi.
MP criticizes reforms
Member of Barker Tony Pasin has warned that the Labor government’s Aboriginal Heritage Reforms could undermine private property rights in the region. Mr Pasin claimed the reforms would force property owners to undergo expensive mandatory cultural surveys for basic activities such as mending fences or planting trees.

You are all aware that the new Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021 (WA) is still in force, at least I hope you are, as nothing has gone through Parliament yet to reverse it ... Partnership to help fund social homes in Toowoomba: Scanlon
The first tenants have moved into new social homes purchased in a partnership between the Palaszczuk Government and YWCA. Fifteen homes will be acquired in total, with the first eight homes already settled and another due to settle next month.
Flames of danger as suspicious fires investigated
A number of fires which have severely impacted sugarcane crops in the Lower Clarence during the past week are being treated as suspicious. Around 11:45pm on August 25, emergency services were called to three properties along Serpentine Channel South Bank Road, Bewleys Lane, and Beckmans Lane in Harwood, following reports of fires in sugarcane crops.
Showdown at farms along VNI West

Wednesday, August 30, Transmission Company Victoria ran into approximately 30 farmers and local supporters as they continue to stealthily door knock landowners in the area of the VNI West. Several pensioners, isolated and absent landowners have been targeted by the state appointed company Transmission Company Victoria in an attempt to blindside locals who will live with the 80-metre transmission lines in their local community.

The region’s mayors and CEOs will work together to access investment for improved roads, housing, health and education. That was one of the key messages from Naracoorte Lucindale mayor Patrick Ross who recently welcomed the various civic leaders to Naracoorte.

Tiny homes make big impact in Gympie: Scanlon
