Tennant Creek celebrates our First Nations achievers
Catherine Grimley. It may have been two weeks late, but our local NAIDOC Committee was determined that the events they had planned would go ahead as soon as it was safe to do so, so Monday morning marchers gathered outside the NLC office for the walk to Nyinkka Nyunyu to celebrate NAIDOC Week. The weather was kind to the marchers with little wind and beautiful sunshine as they made their way down Paterson Street, even the police vehicle that led the march was carrying Aboriginal flags on the bonnet, in keeping with the day.
Alice Springs Street Art Festival set to colour the town, 23 July – 8 August
The streets of Alice Springs will be transformed into an alfresco art gallery when the Alice Springs Street Art Festival (ASSAF) takes place from 23 July to 8 August 2021. The festival will see four of Australia’s top street artists Kaff-eine (Vic), Gus Eagleton (Qld), Brontë Naylor (Qld) and Miss Polly (Darwin) team up with local creatives Tamara Cornthwaite, Karine Tremblay, Mark Circus and Kim Donald to paint six new murals across the CBD.
Nominations open for Council elections
Nominations are now open for the 2021 Local Government Elections. Barkly Mayor Jeffrey McLaughlin will be standing to retain the role while word about town Councillor Hal Ruger may also throw his hat in the ring. Cr Ruger has a long history with Council, with his father Paul elected as Tennant Creek Mayor in 1999.
Multi-million dollar farm in the Barkly to boost region’s economy
A representative from the Singleton Horticulture Project was in Tennant this week to chat with businesses and stakeholders about the future of the almost 3,000 square kilometre horticulture lease which will be used to grow grapes and rockmelons. The multi-million dollar project at Singleton Station will be developed in four stages over an eight year period and expected to create thousands of jobs each year in the region.
Markets remain a Saturday favourite
Catherine Grimley. The Community Lawn sale remains a great way to spend a Saturday morning. Even though it was a little quiet, stallholders still served the needs of locals looking for something different or tasty, with Wan’s Asian food, hand-made earrings from Barkly Bliss and baked goods from the CWA ladies amongst others.
Mining Minister inspects promising Rover project
Mining Minister Nicole Manison was in town to check out the progress of the highly anticipated Castile Resources’ Rover 1 project, 80km south-west of Tennant Creek. ... The Rover 1 project is targeting high grade gold and copper zones associated with massive magnetite ironstone (IOCG), similar to the mines around Tennant Creek.
Prison sentence for woman who bashed uncle with metal pole
A 44-year-old Alpurrurulam woman has been imprisoned after pleading guilty to causing serious harm to her 55-year-old uncle ... The sentence was suspended on the conditions she not drink alcohol, be under parole for two years and nine months, be subject to the Alternative to Custody Program for two years and nine months, be under the electronic monitoring program and not leave the Northern Territory without permission and not approach her uncle.
Investigation into the former principal of Milingimbi School
The Independent Commissioner Against Corruption NT, Ken Fleming QC, has made findings of corrupt conduct against a former principal of Milingimbi School in Central Arnhem Land and has made a series of recommendations relating to oversight and governance of remote schools. The ICAC report found that Ms Jennifer Lea Sherrington benefited from her position as principal of Milingimbi School by misapplying Department of Education and Milingimbi School Council funds, misusing debit cards and exploiting the lack of guidelines and department oversight for the Principal’s Initiative cost code.
Literacy for Life program comes to Tennant
Catherine Grimley. Everyone is aware of how much of a disadvantage low literacy can be in everyday life, and how those with literacy problems can be reluctant to ask for help for a variety of reasons. This issue is set to be less of a problem in Tennant Creek with the Literacy for Life program setting up to start classes at premises in Noble Street.
Events postponed, but Show can still go on
The Chief Minister announced Territory Day celebrations across the NT are deferred due to the unfolding COVID situation in Darwin ... Territory Day will go ahead at a later date so we can all celebrate together ... The Alice Springs Show which was due to happen today was cancelled due to the lockdown.
Students kick goals in Darwin
Pam Dillon. Students from the Barkly demonstrated their prowess and love for the round-ball game at the recent NT Under 12 Soccer Championships and Development camp in Darwin.
Revised Remote Engagement and Coordination Strategy launched
Local Government Minister Chansey Paech and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Selena Uibo were in town this week to launch the revised edition of the Remote Engagement and Coordination Strategy (RECS). The RECS is part of a suite of tools designed to improve all aspects of regional and remote engagement, travel, and coordination of community visits ... Work on the RECS second edition was led by a group of NT Government agencies and the Aboriginal Peak Organisations Northern Territory.
Australia Post to take over local outlet’s operations
The Tennant Creek Local Post Office operations will be taken over by Australia Post next Tuesday. “We look forward to continuity of services for the Tennant Creek community and to servicing our valued customers there,” a spokesperson said. The move comes after former manager Rebecca Liebelt and her husband Greg Liebelt, who are jointly accused of money laundering appeared in court mid-May.
Territory iron shipment leaves Darwin port
The first shipment of iron ore from processed waste materials at Frances Creek Mine are being celebrated this week as a huge sign of strength and confidence in the Territory’s mineral industry. The Territory Labor Government approved the Mining Management Plan for the Frances Creek Mine in March 2020 enabling the processing of existing ore stockpiles at the mine. NT Bullion – the operator of the mine – has been using innovative x-ray technology from German based Steinert to screen waste rock stockpiles at the site to produce export quality iron ore.
Supporting investment in the Territory: New acreage release for gas exploration
The Territory Government is creating investment opportunities for the resources sector with today’s announcement of a new acreage release for onshore petroleum exploration. Applications and submissions for an exploration permit are now invited over two areas in the southern Georgina Basin, on the Northern Territory/Queensland border.
Be Crocwise in the Top End
With the dry season in full swing and school holidays just around the corner, Territorians and visitors are being urged to be Crocwise when exploring the Top End. So far this year, crocodile management teams have removed more than 160 crocodiles from Top End waterways.
