Leslie Williams MP. Congratulations and thank you to all those who made submissions to the Electoral Commission Redistribution Panel in relation to the proposal to move LHI from the electorate of Port Macquarie to the electorate of Sydney!
From the 1930s novel, “Psalmist of the Dawn” – garfish netting at Old Settlement Beach
Chris Murray. Mary Marlowe’s novel, Psalmist of the Dawn (published in 1934 but probably written in 1931) is set on Lord Howe and populated with real places, activities and people – that latter only slightly disguised behind pseudonyms ... Garfishing was an important part of the Islanders’ semi-subsistence lifestyle before World War II. Large quantities of gars were caught not only for local consumption but also for sale to passing vessels.
Farmers crossed in crosshairs of state-ism gone mad
As National Cabinet prepares to meet, farmers have accused state premiers of ‘arrogance’ over border arrangements, saying they seem to have forgotten that growing food and fibre is essential to public health. The National Farmers’ Federation is calling on National Cabinet to recommit to the National Agriculture Workers Code and focus on quarantine solutions for ag workers as a bumper grain harvest looms.

Following recent victories at his home track, Neil Godbolt is poised for further training success in the Club North Haven Camden Haven Cup at Port Macquarie on Saturday. The prominent north coast stable completed a double a fortnight ago when Lord Jaysea and Jazzles posted wins with the pair set to clash in the club’s feature event on the program.
Food security in Western NSW
National Indigenous Radio Service. The shadow minister for Indigenous Australians says the federal government is ill-equipped to deal with the level of food insecurity in COVID hit First Nations communities.
Angus Seekamp buys in Broken Hill
The 33,789-hectare land lease of Wendi Station, in the far west of New South Wales, has been bought by Angus Seekamp from close by Woolcunda Station for $6.05 million. Situated 20 kilometres from the Silver City Highway and 100 kilometres south of Broken Hill, Wendi Station is suited to both cattle and sheep and has been owned by Mark and Chris Eglinton for 40 years, who will now retire.
Roc goes with the flow of Murray River
Sydney-based private equity firm Roc Partners has bought a majority stake in the Murray River Land business, giving it control of more than 60 farms either side of the river. Mostly former dairy farms, the northern Victoria and southern New South Wales properties span a combined 10,000 hectares between Numurkah and Tocumwal.
Bushfires and logging debate: South East Timber Association
In southern Australia, whether native forests are subject to harvesting or left untouched, if appropriate landscape scale forest fuel management is not undertaken, high intensity bushfires at a mega scale can occur in any summer, particularly when there are two or more years of below average rainfall. Any climate change effects are a reason to do more mitigation by fuel reduction.
Bushfires and logging debate: Robert Onfray
We have a fire problem in Australia that is not being addressed. And it has nothing to do with climate change. Nor is logging a major contributing factor since very small areas are available for harvesting each year. It is about the decisions in the 1990s across most states, but particularly in NSW and Victoria to lock up millions of hectares of forest into national parks and manage them by benign neglect and allow the fuel levels to build up.
Logging and watering in Guttrum
The frogs are singing and the harvesters ring in the Guttrum Forest. Reed Bed Swamp has been receiving a blessing of water across the forest floor ... Redgum saplings, salinity, midstorey and understorey condition are themes of contention between locals and government agencies ... I wonder what will happen if the Victorian Andrews Government continues with plans to end native forestry. Who will promote forest health and manage density?
57 career wins for Logan McNeil
Kendall Jennings. Logan McNeil’s progress is something I look forward to researching. Logan has now notched 57 career race wins. The latest was on August 9 aboard ‘Super Quick Love’, a chestnut six-year-old mare, winning by a 1.8 length margin over 2000 metres at Mildura for the second time.

Claire Rankin. Evans Head Fish Co-op may be forced to close temporarily because of covid, its chair Bill Litchfield said. He was “extremely concerned” about how the snap lockdown has impacted the co-op and fishing industry.
Spate of frog deaths has scientists worried
Frog scientists are concerned about a large number of sick, dying or dead frogs across eastern Australia. The mass deaths in NSW, Queensland and Victoria may be an indicator of a known fungal pathogen or a new strain.
Phantom Bonnie wins for Free
Phantom Bonnie was ahead of the pack at Casino Greyhound Racing Club.
“Doin’ it for Holly” round a big success
Angie Day. Grafton Hockey Association recently hosted a highly successful “Doin’ it for Holly” Round on Saturday August 14. The day is named in honour of Holly Butcher, a local Graftonian and hockey player who sadly passed away in 2018 at the age of 27 after a battle with Ewings Sarcoma. In her final days, Holly wrote a very moving letter titled “A bit of life advice from Hol” ... One of Holly’s final requests in her letter was to encourage people to become blood donors, so one of the big focuses of the “Doin’ it for Holly” day was the “100 lives Challenge”.
Plans to unlock former Grafton Gaol site
Under the proposal, a portion of the site will be transferred to the Grafton Ngerrie LALC to support better outcomes for the Aboriginal community, and successfully resolve an Aboriginal land claim. Another parcel of land adjacent to Grafton Base Hospital will be transferred to NSW Health ... the SE portion, which comprises significant heritage items, will be set aside for future adaptive reuse with heritage protections in place ...
