Ember survives, then dies as koala volunteers try to save her
During the 2019 bushfires, Ember was severely dehydrated, her fur was black, coated in soot and she was badly singed. She suffered from congested lungs from smoke inhalation and had significant burns to her rump and all four paws.
Was summer 2023/2024 the hottest for Lord Howe Island?
Ian Hutton. It depends on how you read the Bureau of Meteorology data - maximums, minimums, average daily etc ... However, if we take a simple measure of the number of days with maximums over 28 degrees C, then summer of 2023/2024, was Lord Howe’s hottest on record.
Crustose coralline algae: Pretty in pink
Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are related to seaweeds but grow rock-hard crusts instead of fleshy fronds. Many species are candy or pastel pink, adding a splash of colour to reefs and rockpools ... We are excited to be back for another wonderful Easter, with a good number of entrants and we expect similar numbers around the Narrandera Sportsground Oval as there were for last year's Easter Sunday Show 'n Shine which had 500 cars in attendance ... The usual Show and Shine will take place on Easter Sunday again at the Narrandera Sportsground like last year...
Funding flows 17 months after floods
Earthmoving contractors who worked to protect Koondrook during the October 2022 floods have finally received payment from the state government after 17 months of waiting. Local contractor Danny Gleeson said that not being paid makes you question dropping everything to help.

Crackdown on rural crime to help farmers
Preventing rural crime against farmers and rural industries is one of our priorities for Crime Stoppers and the NSW Police Force. Crime Stoppers has invested over $250,000 in a range of marketing material to assist farmers, by helping to encourage reporting but also to prevent crimes ... When a crime is reported, particularly promptly, there is not just a greater chance of catching the perpetrators, but it increases the chance of recovering the stolen goods for our farmers.
Reflecting on our Rod Run history
Narrandera's Easter Rod Run actually originated in a modest kitchen of Narrandera milkman Mal Christie. In Graham Smith’s fourth edition of his full colour glossy magazine The Australian Hot Rodder, Christie told Smith that it all began on Boxing Day 1970 when Victorian drag racer and show judge John English stopped over in Narrandera with his family on their way to Queensland.

With the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Good Friday Appeal being held ... we have brought you the story of young Frank Skratulja, whose family has utilised the services of the hospital since June 2022 as well as the Mercy and Sunshine hospitals. Frank was born just before his identical twin brother Luka on May 25, 2022 at the Mercy Hospital.
Grafton land claim granted
A vacant house and on Crown Land with river views in Grafton will return to the local Aboriginal community ownership after a successful claim by the local Aboriginal Land Council. In June 2023, the Grafton Ngerrie Local Aboriginal Land Council lodged a land claim on a 1200 square metre block of Crown Land on Duke Street, Grafton, which was granted last week.
Drake land returned to traditional owners
A large area of crown land near the village of Drake, in the upper reaches of the Clarence River catchment has been returned to the Jubullum Local Aboriginal Land Council following a successful land claim. The NSW Aboriginal Land Council NSWALC made the claim on 104.4 hectares of crown land across two adjoining blocks on the western side of Drake, which will be returned as freehold land to the Jubullum Local Aboriginal Land Council.
