Ratepayers protest councillor suspension

Yorke Peninsula Ratepayers Association members gathered on the steps of the Minlaton Town Hall, holding A4 printouts of Councillor Meyer’s face, as well as signs reading "What truths are the CEO and mayor hiding?"...

Biggest fishing comp ever

Hay Lions 2025 fishing competition has been hailed as the biggest ever, with 900 tickets sold and 690 fishing entrants ... Travelling five hours from Ballarat for a weekend of fishing with mates paid off for a beaming James Waller. He won the main prize of a 399 Stacer boat, complete with motor and trailer.

Earlier in the month, Jack Dodds and Lenny Shurdington represented the West Wimmera Warriors and played in the U13 HCA side at Country Week in Portland. The team won 3 of their 5 games, with narrow losses to the two Warrnambool teams.

It’s quirky because you can play the largest collection of pinball machines in the country at the Australian Pinball Museum.

No action on allegations Aboriginal sites were destroyed

In November 2024, The Riverine Grazier reported on investigations NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) into concerns Aboriginal scarred trees had been removed from Gundaline Station’s Red Gum forests ... "The Department has decided not to continue its investigation or take any further action in response to this matter."

Shirley Hajek is a household name throughout Hay Shire and a popular selection for the 2025 Citizen of the Year ... An emotional Shirley accepted her award from Australia Day Ambassador, Susie Elelman AM during the traditional breakfast ceremony at Hay Gaol Museum on Sunday.

Hay run makes Renmark stop

Renmark provided a rest stop for more than 50 trucks carrying hay to help South Australian farmers impacted by drought. A convoy of trucks carrying hay to be donated to drought-affected farmers, through organisation Aussie Hay Runners with support of the State Government, last Saturday passed through Renmark.

Wendy’s netball legacy earns an OAM

Berri woman Wendy Gambling has been recognised for a lifetime of service to Riverland netball, with her commitment to the sport and its players as an administrator and volunteer earning her a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) as part of the 2025 Australia Day Honours.

New book celebrates the Modern Merino

Heather Fleming. A new book detailing the story of the Modern Merino sheep in Australia was launched at the Grampians Estate Cellar Door at Great Western last weekend. "Collinsville and Beyond: a pastoral history of the Modern Merino," was written by Chris Guthrie, well known breeder, classer and consultant from Rich Avon, near Donald.

The ‘Burn is back on track

Peter Hibberd. The Wedderburn and District Harness Racing Club returned to its own track last Sunday, with a major upgrade to the Donaldson Park complex and torrential rain last year, the club finally got to run its feature races.

Buloke achievers recognised

The 2025 Buloke Shire Council Awards celebration was held on January 23, in Wycheproof Town Hall, featuring buffet-style catering with an incredible selection of delicious food ... “These awards are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the incredible people in our community,” Mayor Alan Getley said.

Waikerie’s ‘Golden Girls’ of dance

Christine Webster. A Waikerie dance group featuring 12 women over the age of 60 is entertaining the community and keeping physically and mentally fit by taking part in weekly classes. The Waikerie Golden Girls Dance Troupe was formed after retired dance teacher Pam Tink started running classes for seniors at the local CWA Hall about three years ago.

Tasar state heats held at Wallaroo

Wilson McShane. Wallaroo Sailing Club was in the spotlight over the weekend of January 25-27, hosting the Tasar state heats where two of its crews placed in the top three ... Wallaroo Sailing Club commodore Margaret Pope said Clayton Bay’s Craig McPhee (skipper) and his crew, Wayne Hale — who recently also won the 50th national Australian Tasar title — claimed a relatively comfortable victory.
