Spiritual cleansing for Wallaroo Hospital
Sarah Herrmann. An Aboriginal traditional healer has performed a spiritual cleansing at Wallaroo Hospital after Indigenous patients reported feeling uncomfortable while receiving health services there. The Yorke and Northern Local Health Network invited traditional healer, or Ngangkari, Debbie Watson, from the APY Lands in northern South Australia, to help cleanse Wallaroo Hospital and the Wallaroo Community Health Building last week.

New Indigenous-managed land and sea areas across Australia: Plibersek, Burney
From the Western Australian deserts to the NSW rainforests, the new projects combined will protect 7.5 million hectares of land and 450,000 hectares of sea Country – bigger than the size of Tasmania. This is on top of existing IPAs which currently cover 87 million hectares of land and over five million hectares of sea Country – the majority of Australia’s national estate.
Broome Night Space helping community and youth stay safe: Papalia, Winton
Broome's new Immediate Response Night Space (IRNS) service - also known as Ngurra Buru - has created a safe service to help get young people off the streets and into care after hours. Funded by the Cook Government, the IRNS program has for two months been offering a culturally secure service led by an Aboriginal organisation to children aged 10-17 for four nights a week from 10pm to 5am ... provides a safe physical location, outreach services including a night patrol, meals and next-day family follow-up.
Aboriginal rangers share rich cultural heritage in the ruggedly beautiful Pilbara
When a group of Midwest Traditional Owners visited the Pilbara recently they gained a whole lot more than a training experience. The Yamatji, Jidi Jidi and Nanda groups from the Midwest were hosted by the Yindjibarndi group at Millstream Chichester National Park, south of Karratha.
Investing in water security across the Northern Territory: Plibersek, Worden
A joint investment of $8 million is being made to the Community Infrastructure Assessment project which will allow for water services in 55 remote communities to be assessed ... The Federal Government is also investing $2.3 million to develop a detailed business case for the expansion of the Ord Irrigation Expansion project.
Canteen Creek celebrates 40 years
It has been 40 years since the small Barkly community of Canteen Creek was established and the residents are in celebration mode. Set on Alyawarr land around 180 km southeast of Tennant Creek, Canteen Creek was established by Raymond Butcher Mick who wanted to move his family from town back to the bush to develop a strong connection to the land.

Father and son appointed to Commonwealth First Nations water ownership program
The Albanese Government has launched a water ownership program for First Nations peoples in the Murray-Darling Basin, delivering on an election commitment. Jamie and Ian Woods from Hay have been appointed to the interim governance body has been set up so that water entitlements can be purchased, before a permanent body is established. Both men are of the Nari Nari nation.
New Maroochydore landmark celebrates First Nations culture
A new sculptural public artwork by Kabi Kabi artist and cultural leader Lyndon Davis will fittingly welcome visitors to Sunshine Coast City Hall with a story that is significant to the region’s First Nation’s people. Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli unveiled the piece today (July 1) ... “The 4.5 metre tall work titled Dura Gunga (Mullet & Sea Eagle), embodies the rich cultural narrative of the Kabi Kabi people,” Mayor Natoli said.

Delivering First Nations water ownership in the Basin: Plibersek
The Albanese Labor Government has ... launched a world-leading water ownership program for First Nations peoples in the Murray-Darling Basin, delivering on an election commitment. Under the Aboriginal Water Entitlements Program, the government has made $100 million available to buy water in the Basin, with First Nations representatives to determine how that money is spent.
Narrandera girl takes out top VET Student of the Year award
Narrandera High School Year 12 student, Tahlia Gilbert, has been named Riverina Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander VET Student of the Year for 2024. She now moves on to the state finals. Tahlia is in her final year of her school-based traineeship - Certificate III Human Services with Murrumbidgee Local Health District working at the Narrandera Hospital.

Jon Bell’s first feature film hits the big screen
Casino filmmaker Jon Bell has had a huge year with his first feature film The Moogai. In January, it was screened at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, United States. The Moogai is an Australian horror film showing the ongoing trauma of the Stolen Generations through a bogeyman terrorising a family.
